Here's what you need to know - and how to pick.

Whats the difference between Nespresso original and VertuoIf you are considering a more convenient coffee solution, you’re likely looking into Nespresso machines. These machines use special coffee pods to create a variety of espresso-based drinks and some will also make regular coffee. But what is the difference between these two systems and which one is ultimately better? I went hands-on to compare to try them out side by side to see.

Nespresso Original versus Nespresso Virtuo: How To Choose, what’s the difference?

Specifically, I’m reviewing  Nespresso original versus virtuo here in this video, but I’ve reviewed many more models. Both machines make espresso, the Vertuo line is also designed to brew regular coffees to – all in the same machine.

Nespresso launched the VertuoLine in about 2014 as a way to lure North American coffee drinkers, who are less about espressos than they are about full size coffees.
nespresso vertuo next, Original, whats the difference, whyhi

Coffee pods and capsules: what’s the difference?

First, let’s look at the difference between Verturo and original Nespresso pods. The original Nespresso pods are small and narrow and come in one size only (since they’re really meant for espresso), while the Nespresso Vertuo pods are wide and round and may differ in height depending on what’s inside. With an original pod you can make espresso, double espresso or add water for an Americano. Vertuo coffee pods have special barcodes on the pod that carry specific instructions for how each coffee is to be extracted. The Virtuo lineup offers drinks in five sizes, from a single espresso, to double espresso, a 5 ounce gran luongo/Americano (150ml), a 230ml/8 oz ‘mug’ coffee to a 14 oz Alto coffee.

Milk or no milk?

Let’s move on to another differentiator: milk or no milk?

One of the key differences between Nespresso Virtuo vs original set ups is that none of the Vertuo models come with built-in milk frothers, while Nespresso Original does offer machines that will handle the milk, like the automatic Lattissima here.
But you can bundle a Vertuo with Nespresso’s popular Aeroccino frother —often at a discounted price. When it comes to Choice and availability, The Nespresso Original machine has a far bigger selection of capsules. And because the patent on the capsules has expired, you can get them everywhere – and even fill reusable ones with your own coffee.
nespresso vertuo next, Original, whats the difference, whyhiVertuo capsules by contrast are available only from Nespresso because they need a proprietary barcode to be recognized by the Vertuo machine.

Nespresso Vertuo vs Original: Drink options and sizes

Time to talk drink sizing…Nespresso VertuoLine capsules come in three different sizes, so larger drinks can be as strong as smaller ones. In total those three sizes will make 5 different coffee drinks. Nespresso Original Pods only come in one size and are meant to make espresso, double espresso or a luongo.
Now, you can make a bigger coffee with an original pod by adding more water, but it is obviously more diluted… something you don’t get with the Vertuo.
With that said, both the Nespresso and Virtuo machines let you permanently alter the drink size to your tastes – yes even the Nespresso Vertuo capsules with the special barcode can be easily reprogrammed to make the drink you want. I’ve got videos here on the channel that show you how to do that on both types of machines.
I have a how to video that can show you how to do this, right here on the blog.

Nespresso Original Machine vs Vertuo: Coffee quality

Crema is a hot word in coffee circles… Both Original and Vertuo machines and their coffee pods give you a beautiful crema on top of the coffee which a lot of folks really love.
Some say the Vertuo Nespresso capsules produce a thicker layer of crema, and I guess that’s true, but it begins to dissipate almost immediately since it’s mainly a product of all the air in the spinning process. For me, I’d rather a better coffee than taller coffee foam, so I’m not as wowed by that, personally.

I’ve tried dozens of coffee pods from both lineups and I can say there’s lots to choose from and you’ll be able to find something you really like. I find the coffee fresh, delicious, hot and tasty.
nespresso vertuo next, Original, whats the difference, whyhi

Which machine is stronger: Nespresso Vertuo or Original

Brewing pressure is another hot topic, since that helps make a creamier drink.
Despite the seeming higher end feel and more tech smarts of the Vertuo experience, the Vertuo machines use exactly the same amount pressure to extract coffees as the Original line does; you can generally expect 19 bars from both sets of machines.
When it comes to Brew time… Perhaps not surprising but the Original lineup tends to produce faster results. This is likely because original line drinks are smaller.

Coffee Temperature

Coffee should be hot, right? Not so fast. We tend to brew our coffee with boiling water since the temperature can help extract flavours and oils a little easier, but very hot water can make coffee bitter.
You’re probably familiar with cold brew coffee, which essentially replaces heat with time: letting ground coffee sit in cold water for up to 24 hours to extract the same flavors—without the bitterness and acrid taste. For that reason, the Vertuo line uses a slightly lower temperature when making coffee; and here all those rotations help saturate the grounds faster, so not as much heat is needed.
Now for some people this is a problem; coffee that comes out of the machine at any temperature other than volcanic may not be as enjoyable. I guess your temperature and taste preferences are probably very individual. So whether a slightly cooler but more flavourful and less bitter brew will be enjoyable for you is definitely a matter of taste.
For me, I found there were still some Vertuo coffee roasts that did taste bitter, and at the same time I didn’t really notice a huge difference in temperature.

Nespresso Original versus Nespresso Vertuo: which is better?

So…Which to choose? The Original or the slightly more advanced Vertuo line?
Now you know how the key features of Original and Vertuo stack up against each other. In my opinion you should buy a Nespresso Original machine if you want it for espresso or espresso-based drinks. You’ll pay less for the machine and the Nespresso capsules, and you’ll have way more espresso pod choices.
Buy a Nespresso Vertuo machine if you’re more of a coffee drinker and you want the option of making espresso and coffee from the same machine. With the barcoded capsule brewing system, the VertuoLine makes brewing any style and size of drink foolproof, but it is adjustable.

For me, since I want it mainly for espresso, I’m going to stick with my Nespresso Original machine, but I think both of these systems have their benefits. The choice is up to you.

I’d love to hear which line you chose and why, so share your story in comments below.

Nespresso Original and Vertuo are both available from Amazon and Walmart.

Nespresso inissia review

Each day starts with a double espresso for me and while I used to use a fancy, expensive machine, I’ve gotten to realize the efficiency of coffee pods. Now I’m a Nespresso convert. I wanted to try one of Nespresso’s newer machines that is extremely popular. So in this review of the Breville Nespresso Inissia, I’ll show you how it works, what the coffee is like, as well as the pros and one big con you’ll want to be aware of after having it in my home for two weeks.

Nespresso Inissia
3

Summary

It’s small but it isn’t the smallest espresso brewer Nespresso makes. Here the bigger footprint allows for additional pods in the disposal bin and a bit more water in the tank.

This model has an industrial chic look that gives it a little more style than some other Nespresso machines. The coffee it makes is delicious, hot, thick, and with a beautiful crema, and I like that I can customize the sizes so it’s perfect for my morning routine. The water tank is plenty big enough so that I don’t feel like I’m refilling it constantly. For those who want a bigger water tank, there are larger machines out there, and they come with more features and a higher price too.

If there are any cons to this machine, for some it might be that you can’t adjust the water temperature, but for me this was not an issue. My biggest gripe was the loud and buzzing noise during the breathing process. If you also think that something that would annoy you, I can absolutely recommend my Nespresso Essenza mini as a quieter alternative.

The other potential downsides to this machine include the inept cup riser, and the potential for leaks.

Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Industrial chic style
  • High-quality espresso with crema
  • Customizable sizing
  • Reasonably large water tank

Cons

  • Water temperature not adjustable
  • Noisy
  • Cup riser a potential source of leaks

Breville Nespresso Inissia review

Nespresso inissia review

Some out there may be wondering, is a Nespresso Innisia espresso machine worth it? I was not into Nespresso at first, but a couple things changed my mind: after staying with friends who both have Nespresso machines I discovered I like the coffee and it’s a very quick and easy way to get espresso.

I chose the Breville Nespresso Inissia espresso maker because it’s relatively small while still being kind of stylish. It measures about 5 inches wide by about 12 inches long, and 9 inches tall, and it offers two sizes of coffee with two preset buttons. I don’t add milk to my coffee so all I wanted was something for straight-up espressos.

Watch my video review of Nespresso Inissia

Set up: Breville Nespresso Inissia

Let’s start Nespresso Innisia review with its setup. There’s really no set up required for this machine. Just plug it in and push one of the buttons to power it on. It’s ready to go immediately. The kit I bought also included a sample pack of Nespresso capsules, which was a nice way to try some different coffees.

When it comes to the power, Nespresso machine inissia gives you 19 bars of pressure from its pump and has a 27 ounce water tank. It’s super small and weighs almost nothing (about 5 pounds).

The first time I ran the machine Nespresso recommends you run a cycle of water through it first before you brew coffee. Almost immediately the water tank leaked water all over the counter. Thinking I had just set it up incorrectly I took it apart and put it back together again, but same problem. For some reason the machine was oddly leaky. Now, once I got the brewing process underway and started using it regularly the leaks seem to have abated. But it doesn’t give me a whole lot of confidence to see that in the beginning so it’s something I will have to keep an eye on. I later went to the Nespresso website and saw that many customers are complaining that this device is leaky, so, be warned.

Breville Nespresso Inissia: Adjustable drink sizes

Though I didn’t realize it at the time, and the instructions don’t say so, you can actually program the exact size of drinks you want your Breville Nespresso Inissia espresso maker to make, for both the small size and the large.

It comes out of the box programmed for a small double shot from the small button, and what seems like a quad for the large.

By pushing and holding the button while it;’s making an espresso, then letting go when you’ve got your desired amount, you are creating a new saved setting. Next time you just touch the button your custom drink volume has been saved. I set mine so that the small button pours a single and the large an oversized double. If you want a little more detail on how to do this or to share these instructions with someone else, check out my video how to adjust Nespresso drink sizes easily.

Nespresso coffee & pods

We could spend some time here on the environmental impact of coffee pods. For the most part, neither aluminum Nespresso pods, nor plastic Keurig K-cups are recyclable in a lot of city’s recycling programs; they’re just too small. But I am really happy to say Nespresso inissia espresso machine encourages you to recycle the aluminum pods by including a pre-paid return bag with your order.

When it comes to the coffees and their taste, there’s lots to enjoy. I find the coffees, packaged in their little pods to be really fresh tasting, and with the stunning number of different roasts, tastes, flavours and options, you’re bound to find lots you’ll like.

Nespresso Pod cost

Let’s talk about what it costs to brew your morning espresso. Nespresso pods can be had on the Nespresso website for about 80 cents to $1.25 per pod. Compared to the cost of a coffee shop espresso, that’s a bargain. I have also, by the way seen reusable Nespresso capsules so you can use your own coffee too. Either way, I’m perfectly happy paying about a buck for my morning espresso.

Coffee brew quality: Breville Nespresso Inissia

Nespresso inissia review

Brewing a coffee is as simple as turning it on and waiting for it to heat up, which takes less than 20 seconds- about 10 seconds faster than my Delonghi. I’m impressed with how fast this is. Then you pop in a capsule, pull down the arm to lock the machine, and choose your size. My drink brewed in about 10 seconds.

One thing I like about the Nespresso machine Inissia and really all Nespresso machines is that the espresso comes out nice and thick, it’s not watery. It ends up with a nice crema on top, and it’s actually really hot, definitely hot enough for me. You can argue that crema has nothing to do with quality… But it is a nice touch that makes the espresso look appealing.

No adjustable temperature

This machine, like other Nespresso machines, doesn’t have an adjustable brewing temperature (it comes from the factory set to about 83-86 degrees, says Nespresso). Nespresso intends this to be at a hot but drinkable temperature so you can sip the espresso right away, and says if it’s not hot enough, to pre-heat your cup.

Some folks might not appreciate that you can’t adjust the water temperature, but I was definitely fine with the factory setting.

The Breville Nespresso Inissia has some handy features; the energy saver feature shuts it off in a few minutes if it’s not used again, the water tank holds more than enough water for 13 doubles before it needs to be refilled.

There’s a flip-out cup riser which actually works well for smaller espresso cups, but it’s extremely poorly designed for larger cups, with the rim of the cup being really close to the spout. Because the cup riser only flips up and it’s not removable, it actually gets in the way of getting a larger coffee mug into the proper position. I think this is a very poor design and hopefully will be reworked in future configurations.

There’s a small pod bin that holds about 10 discarded pods. All the pieces can go in the dishwasher.

Breville Nespresso Inissia; not as quiet as other machines

The Delonghi Nespresso machine I currently have is a pretty quiet brewer, but this Breville Nespresso Inisia does make a noticeable and fairly loud buzzing noise. The noise stays on through the entire brewing cycle and is rather annoying. In comparison to my DeLonghi Essenza mini, it sounds like a freight train rolling through the kitchen. While I am exaggerating, it is a significant flaw in this machine as far as I am concerned.

Ending the Breville Nespresso Inissia Review

Overall this machine is a stylish and capable Nespresso machine that does the job admirably.

My biggest gripe was the loud and buzzing noise during the breathing process. If you also think that something that would annoy you, I can absolutely recommend my Nespresso Essenza mini as a quieter alternative.

The other potential downsides to this machine include the inept cup riser, and the potential for leaks.

While I had a fine experience with it, you’ll want to weigh these cons carefully. The Breville Nespresso Inissia sells for about $209 CAD though I have seen it on sale for about $139 CAD.

You can watch my full review of the Essenza mini which is my #1 pick for a great all-around Nespresso machine, or check out what a more full-featured Nespresso machine has to offer right now.

Ninja 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Brewer sitting on kitchen counter

For coffee drinkers, the day doesn’t truly begin until after that first cup. So making it easy to get can set the tone for the next 12 hours— and beyond. Ninja’s automatic 12 cup coffee maker is massively popular, so is that because it’s cheap, or because it’s good? I picked up one of these coffee makers from Amazon to test out in my kitchen so I’ll let you know how easy the Ninja 12 Cup Programmable Brewer is to set up and use, how easy it cleans up, and what it looks like on the countertop too. (CE251)

Ninja 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Brewer CE200C
4.5

Summary

Overall, this is a solid coffee maker. It was easy to program, easy to clean, and easy to fill due to the removable water reservoir. The coffee it made was top notch, and the fact that everything will go in the dishwasher for clean up is pure magic. There aren’t a lot of extra programmable bells and whistles, but if you’re looking for a simple coffee maker, this is a good choice.

Pros

  • Easy to program
  • Easy to clean
  • Removable water reservoir
  • No-spill carafe
  • Makes great coffee!

Cons

  • Not a lot of additional programmable features (i.e. adjustable, holding temperature, or brewing temperature)

Design

Ninja hasn’t gone above and beyond when it comes to the design. That’s not a criticism, since I believe they’ve put all of their engineering efforts into making this a dynamite coffee maker. While much of the construction is plastic, and the footprint is a little larger than some other similar automatic coffee makers, Ninja makes the most of the additional space it takes up with some pretty smart features.

The glass carafe holds up to 12 cups and sits on a warming plate that can keep your brew hot for hours. The carafe has an extremely comfortable large plastic handle and a really cleverly designed spout that in my testing did not spill a single drop.

The water tank for this machine lives on the side, instead of hidden on the back. While this means it takes up a bit more room, Ninja has made the tank removable with an easy to grip handle, that saves so much trouble. Instead of filling the carafe and then having to pull the coffee maker out from under your cabinets and open up a lid to refill it, you can just remove, fill and replace the tank. I’m probably jumping ahead here, but this design alone would make me purchase the Ninja 12 cup programmable brewer.

My hands-on video review

The machine comes with a reusable metal mesh filter and you can also use Number 4 Cone paper filters if you prefer.

On the side of the machine is an included coffee scoop.

Under the removable water tank is your control centre for some of the other features, so let’s get to them.

Programming

Removable water tank.

The name gives it away, but yes, you can program your Ninja coffee maker to have your brew ready for you when you wake up. Setting both the clock and the brewing schedule is easy using the hour and minute buttons on the front of the control panel. Similarly, you can also adjust how long the machine will keep your coffee warm after the brewing cycle has completed by using the stay warm button. Out of the box, the coffee maker will stay on for two hours after a brewing cycle, but you can adjust this up to four hour

Coffee strength & temperature

Since we’re taking a look at the control panel, let’s get to the brewing strengths options. Ninja offers what’s called a classic brew strength and a rich brew strength. Essentially Classic could be regular coffee while Rich is a stronger brew that ninja says is better suited to standing up to milk, cream, or other flavorings.

My preference is for darker coffees, and even so I actually found the classic brew strength was bold enough for me, and the rich strength just made it even more so. There’s not a ton of difference between these two settings in my opinion (for me it comes down to the coffee beans you’re using), but it does help out a little bit.

Temperature

The water temperature at brewing time is 181F or 82.5C.

Small Batch setting

If you don’t generally drink a full pot of coffee, you can use ninjas small batch setting to brew from 2 to 4 cups. I’m not 100% clear on exactly what this setting truly does since Ninja makes sure to point out in the manual that even if you have the small batch button turned on it will use up all of the water you pour into the water tank. From what I can glean, Ninja believes this quote, ensures the same great flavour as a full carafe brew” but I didn’t really notice a difference.

Brew speed

If you’re not using the advanced programming, you’ll definitely want to pay attention to this next metric: how long does it take to brew a full pot? From my testing, it takes approximately 12 to 15 minutes to brew a full carafe, which is both reasonable and expected for a coffee maker of this type. Of course if you’re jonesing for that first java, you can use the ‘pause and serve’ feature which blocks coffee from pouring out if you remove the carafe briefly.

I can say this feature also worked really well and I didn’t notice any drips or over spill.

The water sprinkler (I’m sure it has an official name) that drips the hot water over the grounds is wide and covers a lot of area, which I actually think helps to saturate the coffee grounds better.

I will just mention the strange lid that comes with this coffee maker. It has one feature I really like and another feature I was very unclear about. While I’ve already talked about the great spout, the lid also locks on with a twist, making it very secure so you’ll never have to worry about spills or accidents. The other thing the lid has is what’s called the ‘flavour straw’.

Despite building it into the machine and including it in the marketing, nowhere could I find what this alleged flavour straw was supposed to do. I did find one sentence on their website that says it helps to ‘mix the coffee for consistent flavour’, but I don’t really understand what that means or see it in action. I guess if you’re brewing a whole pot, it will pipe the freshly brewed coffee into the middle or lower part of the pot so in theory, you’re not getting progressively weaker coffee floating on top as the pot fills up? I’ll go with that.

Clean up

Ninja 12 cup programmable brewer

Cleanup is a big deal when it comes to your coffee maker. I’m glad to see the glass carafe, brew-through lid, removable filter, holder, permanent filter, water, reservoir, and lid, as well as the scoop are all dishwasher safe.

Overall review: Ninja automatic Coffee Maker

Overall I would actually like to replace my current aging coffee maker with The Ninja Programmable Coffee Maker… the removable water reservoir is actually a huge plus for me since it means I don’t have to scoot the machine all over the counter to fill the tank. The coffee it made was top notch, and the fact that everything will go in the dishwasher for clean up is pure magic. It was easy to program and adjust all of the settings so even folks with a fear of setting alarm clocks, would still be able to operate this easily. So what are the downsides? I’m really struggling to find any thing bad to say about this coffee maker. Some folks may wish there was adjustable, holding temperature, or brewing temperature, but I didn’t feel those were major features I needed.

Particularly for the extremely reasonable price, this machine is offered at, I think it’s an outstanding programmable coffee maker, and I can absolutely recommend it to you.

It sells for about $79US/$148CAD and you can get yours as I got mine from Amazon.

I’ve recently been playing around with a new accessory for Thermomix; the Cutter attachment. If you’re wondering how it works and if it’s worth it, you can watch my full review. But in the video accompanying this post, I’ll make some dishes for supper to show you what it’s like to use.

The Cutter is really easy to use and it can slice almost any fruits or veggies. Plus grating cheeses, cabbage, carrots and potatoes is also fast when you have a robot to help you.

Don’t forget to check out the full review of the Thermomix TM6, or see how you can even bake cakes in your cooking robot… right now.If you like to cook but hate the work, kitchen cooking robots can HELP YOU. There’s a few on the market but I really like Thermomix. I’ve recently been playing around with a new accessory for Thermomix; the Cutter attachment.

What is Thermomix Cutter?

Thermomix cutter with cucumber

The Thermomix Cutter is a slicing and grating attachment that fits onto your Thermomix and makes faster work of tedious kitchen chores, shooting slices or gratings into a bowl, ready for you to cook with. If you’re wondering how it works and if it’s worth it, you can read my full review. But in my video how-to I’ll make a quick dish for supper to show you what it’s like to use. Thermomix is making new recipes for its TM6 robot, and some of them use the slicer or grater to speed things up or make it look prettier. I’ll be making potato gratin.

Making Potato Gratin with Thermomix Cutter

Thermomix cutter amaking potato gratin

The steps are easy and the Thermomix TM6 walks you through it…

How to use Thermomix Cutter?

Start by assembling the Cutter – the catch bowl goes into the steel mixing bowl, then you choose which side of the blade goes up to do the work. One side is for cutting, the other for grating. Then add the lid with its two-sided feeder chute. If you have small potatoes, they can go in whole, or you can trim your potatoes so they’ll fit.

When you’re ready turn it on and then start feeding in the potatoes. It creates perfectly uniform slices that you can then lay nicely in a baking dish.

A creamy sauce gets made in the bowl next, and poured over the sliced potatoes.

Finally you can grate some cheese to sprinkle over the top.

Bake it according to your Thermomix’s recipe instructions and then voila! Potato gratin!

Making Cucumber Salad

Next up I made a salad to go along with the meal; Thermomix’s cucumber salad.

Thermomix cutter slicing cucmbers

This salad uses thinly sliced cucumber, which is made perfectly even with the Cutter.
When you get to the end some of the pieces do stray from uniformity a bit, but since it’s all going in a big salad bowl, no worries.
After making quick work of the cukes, the TM6 makes the dressing, walking you through the measurements, then blending it.
Pour the dressing over the veg and your fresh cucumber salad is ready. The Cutter is really easy to use and it can slice almost any fruits or veggies. Plus grating cheeses, cabbage, carrots and potatoes is also fast when you have a robot to help you.

Hamilton Beach Food Processor Review Food processors are like an extra set of hands when it comes to help in the kitchen. They can do everything from slice and grate, to chop, mix, stir and even knead doughs. Once upon a time, food processors were large, heavy, and bulky, so have things changed much? I recently received a sample of the Hamilton Beach food processor to try in my home to see what it’s good for, and what it can help me with in the kitchen. It’s a very inexpensive food processor that’s also got one unique feature that seems to deal with one of the troublesome aspects of using a food processor and that’s scraping down the sides constantly. So has Hamilton Beach got it nailed when it comes to the best food processors in 2023? I’ll find out in this hamilton beach food processor review and let you know if I think I can recommend this gadget to you.

Hamilton Beach Food Processor with Bowl Scraper
5

Summary

The Hamilton Beach food processor holds a lot of food while taking up relatively little real estate. It feels substantial but it’s not heavy, making it easy to store away or get out for a quick recipe. It makes fast work of a lot of tedious kitchen tasks, and can handle everything from slicing and grating to chopping and mixing, with ease.

Pros

  • Works amazingly well
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Quick cleanup
  • So affordable!
  • Bowl scraper is genius

Cons

  • Could use more finesse in speed control

What’s in the box of Hamilton beach food processors?

What you get in the package is simple and straightforward: there’s the motorized base of the food processor which includes a non-removable motor shaft. Many food processors make this removable but not here. Then the processor itself consists of several parts:

  • Bowl
  • Chopping/Mixing blade
  • Lid with pusher
  • Reversible slicing/shredding disc
  • Bowl scraper

My hands-on video review

This food processor has a surprisingly small footprint, but at the same time it looks like it will hold a decent amount of food for prep.

Set up

There’s not really much in the way of set up; just plug the machine in and it’s essentially ready to go. You’ll need to choose which parts and pieces you need for the task at hand and assemble those, otherwise that’s it.

Chopping & Mixing

Hamilton Beach Food Processor Review If you’re looking to chop vegetables, you can simply drop large chunks into the bowl. During my review I used onions. When you’re ready to chop, just align the lid with the handle of the bowl. That creates a safety lock that allows the blade to begin when you turn the control knob. Amazingly this machine is extremely fast and the blade is very speedy and powerful. It makes quick work of pretty much any type of vegetable.

There are two speeds and a pulse option

The only caveat I’ll make here is that there is really not a lot of speed control and doesn’t seem to be a way to truly slow it down or chop more slowly or more gently. The way to get a courser chop is to simply run the machine for less time. In the recipes I tested out I mainly needed finer dice so the machine did quick and excellent work of it for me.

One of the most important Hamilton food processor instructions is to  add the bowl scraper before you process any of your ingredients. Otherwise you’ll be trying to wedge the scraper in amongst a bowl full of food; not ideal.

I also used this machine to mix a dough to make bread. The recipe I chose is specifically designed for a food processor or a blender, so it worked great in the Hamilton Beach food processor. Despite the fact the blade is a cutter it didn’t destroy my dough and made quick work of the kneading for me.

Using the bowl scraper

Hamilton Beach Food Processor Review The bowl scraper is actually pretty genius, and I fell in love with it from the first use. While your Hamilton Beach food processor is doing its work, you can use the small lever on the lid to maneuver the scraper to scrape the bowl as it works, carving stuck-on food back into the bowl for further chopping. It actually does an extremely thorough job at scraping the sides and getting wayward bits back in front of the blade.

Next up was a homemade hummus. Here the Hamilton Beach food processor really shines. It made a perfectly uniform dip and managed all the ingredients really well. The bowl scraper was brilliant here since when I make hummus with another older food processor, I have to stop about four or five times to scrape down the sides. Here, I was able to simply toggle the scraper around the sides of the bowl while it was mixing and everything finished up extremely quickly. I was left with a perfectly textured hummus.

This tool is so simple yet so smart I can’t believe I haven’t seen a food processor that does this before now.

Slicing & Shredding

The Hamilton Beach food processor will also manage both slicing and grating. The cutting disc that does this is reversible; so whichever action you want, you turn that side of the disk up and then set it over the motor shaft where it will click into place.

Hamilton Beach Food Processor Review I tried it with carrots, and made uniform slices for a soup. The only thing to note here is that there is really only one thickness option so you can’t get fatter or thinner slices. Even so the slices were uniform and worked just fine for my recipe.

Flipping the disk over to test out the grating, I tackled a firm cheese, so I could make a quiche. The gratings are much thicker than I would normally use for something like this; more of a rougher cottage style than a finer grating. Nonetheless, they worked great in my recipe, and I was happy with the results.

Overall review: Hamilton Beach Food Processor with Bowl Scraper

Overall, I’m extremely happy with the results of the Hamilton Beach food processor. Based on my experience and numerous Hamilton Beach food processor reviews, it’s clear that this appliance consistently delivers exceptional performance and reliability.

On the pro side, it holds a lot of food while taking up relatively little real estate. It feels substantial but it’s not heavy, making it easy to store away or get out for a quick recipe. It makes fast work of a lot of tedious kitchen tasks, and can handle everything from slicing and grating to chopping and mixing, with ease.

So what are the downsides? There’s not a lot of ability to finesse the speed with this machine so you have to be careful not to over mix or over chop. There’s also no adjustability with slicing or grating thickness. In my opinion, those are very minor distractions that don’t take away from the overall performance of this food processor.

Plus, there’s also the fact this food processor sells for just about $55 US. It’s more in Canada at $109CAD (and yeah the Canada vs US prices are a bit out of control). I think this is a great food processor for a great price. I can absolutely recommend it to you.

Cuisinart citrus juicer reviewEverybody loves fresh squeezed juice, but for a Canadian in California it holds a particularly special place: Being able to pluck fresh orange, grapefruit and lemons from trees and juice them into your glass moments later is a novelty that never wears off. The only thing about juicing fresh citrus in your smart kitchen is that it can be both messy and tiring working with a manual juicer or reamer. That’s why I’ve been looking into powered options. In this review I’ll check out the electric Cuisinart Citrus Juicer, take a look at any special features it has, what it’s like to clean up, and if I think I can recommend it for you.

Cuisinart Citrus Juicer
5

Summary

Overall this is the best juicer you can buy in my opinion. I’ve had one of these for about 5 years and I love it.

Pros

  • Makes quick work of juicing citrus
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean
  • No set up required
  • Adjustable pulp filter

Cons

  • No cup/pitcher included

My hands-on video review

Cuisinart Citrus Juicer review: What’s in the box?

There’s not much in the way of set up or assembly with this juicer. It arrives fully assembled but the top part of the machine comes apart into four pieces for cleanup; there’s the base tray, reamer and pulp filter basket. A clear plastic cover will keep the juicer from getting dusty. One task you do need to take care of before you start juicing is to click the spout outlet down so that the juice will flow freely.

Cuisinart citrus juicer review

When it comes to set up: Plug it in, and you’re ready to go. When you press down on the juicing head the machine will start automatically. Each time you press down it will reverse direction to ensure it’s scraping out all the juice from the pith.

How well does it work?

I tried a variety of citrus fruits with this juicer and found it was able to handle all of them easily and without feeling like it was laboring. The juicer head and it’s dual basket-reamer design is adjustable by twisting it and this allows you to create more of a filter for the pulp. If the holes are all the way open more pulp ends up in your juice, but twisting them slightly closed will result in a more strained beverage.

Cuisinart citrus juicer review

Pulp & seed filter.

This is a great juicer for making a lot of juice for the family. There’s no work on your part and it seems to be able to extract every last drop with ease, carving the citrus peel virtually empty.

Clean up

When it comes to the cleanup, the juicing head pieces (which are made of plastic) can be put into the top rack of the dishwasher, or easily hand washed in the sink.

Overall review: Citrus Juicer Cuisinart

Cuisinart citrus juicer review

It’s thorough!

Overall this Cuisinart is the best juicer you can buy in my opinion. I’ve had one of these for about 5 years and I love it. It has a compact footprint and it’s not too tall making it easy to store in almost any cupboard. It’s AC-powered operation means no recharging, so it’s always ready to go. The directional reverse helps extract all the juice, and the fact I can toss everything into the dishwasher when I’m done means I use this almost every day. When it comes to downsides, there’s really nothing to dislike; perhaps the biggest complaint I could make is that it could come with a cup or pitcher to store your juice. I can absolutely recommend this juicer to you, and I think it’s at a particularly affordable price too! Selling for 29USD/$69CAD (don’t even get me started on that price discrepancy!) it’s a great value for all the work it will save you.

Thermomix Cutter reviewBy now you might know it’s possible to have a kitchen robot like Thermomix which can cook, bake and do 20 kitchen appliance functions. The Thermomix TM6 is a pretty cool kitchen appliance, and now it’s added the ability to do two more cooking tasks that can otherwise seem like a chore. Thanks to a special attachment for the device you can now get easier grating and slicing, no shredded fingers required! In this review, I got the opportunity to try the new Thermomix TM6 Cutter as it’s known which grates and slices in two different thicknesses. I’ll tell you what it’s like to use, how exactly it works, what specifically it can slice and grate (and what it can’t) and if I think it’s a good add-on for your machine.

Thermomix Cutter

Summary

This cutter is a handy accessory for Thermomix that makes quick work of dull cooking chores.

Pros

  • Easy to clean
  • Cuts well/cleanly
  • Two different thicknesses
  • Works fast
  • Easy to assemble and use
  • Cuts/grates many different fruits and veg, cheese

Cons

  • I’d love a chunkier cut/grate option; or ridges!

Thermomix Cutter hands-on review

Set up and parts

There are a few parts and pieces in the package so let’s lay them out:

  • Bowl
  • Lid with feeder tube
  • Pusher
  • Motor shaft extension
  • Dual-sided Cutting blade

Important to note is that the shaft extension is small and kind of buried in the box. Don’t throw out the packaging until you’ve got it, since a colleague  I know of accidentally tossed hers.

The cutting blade is interesting: It works by cutting or grating at different thicknesses based on which direction it’s are spinning in, and which side is facing up. It’s a bit weird to get your head around, but it’s actually pretty smart. The slices/gratings come in 4mm or 1mm thicknesses.

Putting it all together is easy: remove the lid of your TM6 and any accessories you have in the mixing bowl. Insert the motor shaft and click it into place over the blade. Set the bowl into the stainless steel mixing bowl. Next choose your cutting disc option: Turn whichever side you want to use to face up and set it on the shaft extension. Finally, seat the lid over the blade, slipping the small pin into the centre of the disc. Now you’re ready to slice or grate!

You need to swipe to your quick menu and locate the grating or slicing program if you’re going manual, or choose a recipe that uses the Cutter. Within each program, you’ll choose thick or thin cuts from the menu and this is activated based on the direction the cutter blade spins. Touch start and feed your food into the tube. Watch it in action on a bunch of foods in my video review, above.

What does Thermomix Cutter do?

You may think this accessory is only good for grating cheese and slicing carrots, but not so; it’s surprisingly versatile and can be used on way more foods than you think. Thermomix has a few suggested recipes in its database that work perfectly with the new Cutter.

The grater can make quick work of:

  • Cabbage for coleslaw
  • Potato for hashbrowns
  • Cheeses
  • Carrots for carrot cake
  • Cucumber for raita

Thermomix Cutter reviewFlipping to the slicing side you can get:

  • Sliced apples for pie
  • Sliced carrots for soups and stews
  • Sliced celery or any vegetable for cooking
  • Sliced Potatoes for gratin
  • It will even slice softer foods like strawberries, tomatoes and avocado and firm bananas.

Really the only things Thermomix advises against slicing or grating are chocolate and eggs, since these could clog the machine.

What would YOU use it for? I’d love to hear what you think that I haven’t thought of. Post in the comments below!

Using Thermomix Cutter

Thermomix Cutter review

Finely grated cheese.

I tried using the Cutter on a variety of kitchen tasks.

The first thing I tried was slicing strawberries for a pie, and it made quick work of a finger-staining chore. Plus, the uniform, even slices thanks to the machine ensures an even bake. I sliced carrots for stew and for a carrot salad. With this one, I opted to choose both the thicker cut and the thinner cut just to get some variety in the salad. I sliced potatoes for a layered potato dish for a dinner party, and used Thermomix’s Cookidoo recipe for gratin. The nice uniform slices look beautiful in the finished dish.

Thermomix Cutter review

Thick-grated potato.

I will note that with larger foods that are too fat, chubby or round to fit in either the larger or smaller feeder tube, you do need to trim your food down so it will fit. Sometimes this can prove challenging if you want nice food staging-type slices, but you can usually make it work.

I grated Gruyere for the potato dish too, and also tried using it for grated potatoes to make Irish boxty pancakes.

Thermomix Cutter reviewI made coleslaw and another grated potato and cheese casserole, plus a cucumber salad.

Cleanup

Anyone familiar with Thermomix knows that cleanup is one of the many advantages of this machine. While it’s not conducive to the regular Thermomix cleaning process (fill bowl with water and soap and run it for a few seconds) the plastic parts rinse clean in a second and really only take a quick moment to wash up.

Overall review: Is Thermomix Cutter worth it?

Thermomix Cutter reviewOverall this is a very convenient, helpful and well-engineered accessory for a Thermomix TM6. It makes such quick work of tedious slicing and grating chores and the cleanup is lightning fast. Any downsides? It seems to me there’s not a tonne of difference between the think and thick slices. I’d love a more substantial difference… or maybe new blades will be in the offing in the future to give a chunkier cut. Or rippled slices. Ooh, the possibilities are endless!

If you’ve invested in a Thermomix TM6, this is an accessory you won’t regret getting. It sells for $109US (though I have also seen it offered for free with a new machine purchase. It’s also been routinely sold out!) and you can get it from Thermomix.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer with Auto Sense review: What makes it ‘smart’?

There are a couple of components that make this mixer stand out from the rest of the crowd. Mainly that it connects to a companion app which can assist with several additional smart functions, including weighing what’s in the bowl, and even sensing the torque from the mixing head and adjusting its mixing power accordingly.

The GE Profile Mixer’s 11-speed motor can tell the difference between mixing cake batter, kneading dough and whipping cream for example by sensing resistance in the bowl. What GE calls Auto Sense Technology then kicks in by controlling the motor’s torque and speed, supposedly creating the perfect texture for your recipe. It can also automatically stop when the dough reaches the perfect firmness to prevent over-mixing, a common mistake that can ruin a recipe.

Set up

The first thing I’m going to say about this mixer is that it is astonishingly heavy. The box is all but impossible for one person to move on their own, since the package weighs over 53 pounds. Unpacking was a legitimate challenge, not that I am taking points off the score for that. This is just to say that this mixer is substantial and feels durable as a tank. It gives me a lot of confidence that this mixer will last as long as the iconic KitchenAid that’s on most home bakers’ lifelong wish lists.

What you get

Getting ready to use your mixer takes a few minutes of preparation and connection. When you unbox the mixer you’ll be able to see its parts:
The weighty mixer motor, a stainless steel bowl with handle, a pouring spout/mixing shield and three attachments including the 11-wire whisk, a batter beater and a dough hook.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer attachments on flat table.Getting the bowl seated in the mixer arm is a little bit different than other mixers I’ve tried. Two angled levers poke out from underneath the C-shaped mixing bowl seat. Place your thumbs on both of them at the same time and push down to release the bowl. Conversely, pushing them up and clicking them will keep the bowl in place.

Accessory port accepts KitchenAid attachments

There’s also a powered accessory port on the front that will also accept KitchenAid attachments like a pasta roller.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer powered port.Next up you’ll need to pair your GE profile smart mixer with your home’s Wi-Fi network and for that you need the GE Smart HQ app.
Log into or create a account, then plug your mixer in to begin the pairing process. The app walks you through the steps, and I was connected in just a few clicks. Using the app and the wireless connectivity you can cook using guided or auto sense recipes.

What are GE Profile Guided Recipes?

Guided Recipes are recipes that are provided step-by-step for you to get the most out of your mixer. The app will guide you through the steps and help out by doing things like taking weights of ingredients.

What are Auto Sense recipes?

Auto Sense Recipes are recipes are where the mixer is able to monitor and detect changes in viscosity of your batter or dough, using measurement of the motor’s torque. This feedback is used to optimize mixing, whipping and emulsifying so that you can, in theory, have perfect results every time.

Using GE Profile 7-Quart Smart Mixer with Auto Sense

You can operate the mixer in two ways; the first is on the mixer itself by using the LED-lighted dial and a small screen on top of the machine which lets you select speeds and see what’s going on.

The other way is to control it with your smartphone, though this is not as autonomous as it may seem. For example, while you can set the speed you want and the time or duration of your mixing, once you tap ‘start’ on your phone’s app screen, you still need to go to the mixer itself and touch the start button on top of the machine for the commands to take affect. The mixer is not completely autonomous. You can imagine this is a bit of a safety feature.

Connecting the attachments is easy; they will simply push and lock up and in, and to remove them, push the ring holding them in place, up. The connection feels quite secure, more-so even than the twist and drop connections KitchenAid uses.

Can I use GE Profile smart mixer without Wi-Fi?

You could simply use this mixer without Wi-Fi if you wanted, as you would any other unconnected stand mixer, but that would be silly, since this mixer is substantially more expensive than an unconnected mixer. The technology and the guided assistance is part of the point.

Even so, on its own as a simple mixer, this device is a dream. That formidable weight means it will absolutely not budge through even the stiffest doughs. The mixing action is smooth, and even on higher levels of power the machine is not extremely loud.

The mixing bowl is large (holding 7 quarts) and heavy and feels solidly built.

Not meant to move

I’m going to touch on some thing briefly here because I actually think it’s quite important if you’re considering this mixer. As I’ve mentioned a couple of times, the mixer is extraordinarily heavy. It weighs about 50 pounds, which means if you’re the type of person who stores your mixer in another location and breaks it out when you need it, that could very well be a problem. I consider myself to be a reasonably strong and fit person, but it is a serious struggle to move this mixer around my kitchen. For me, this mixer is best suited to being placed in one location in your kitchen and left there forever.

GE Profile Smart Stand MixerAlso, in my particular kitchen, at 17-inches tall, the machine was just a bit too big to fit underneath my overhead cabinets. I’m not going to crack on GE for this, but you’ll want to measure your space depending where you want to put it.

Making & baking with GE Profile 7-Quart Smart Mixer with Auto Sense

I had this mixer for approximately two weeks and used it to make almost a dozen recipes. In some cases, I simply used my own recipes while in others, I chose to use both GE’s guided and auto sense recipes.

Glorious Cinnamon Buns!

There’s a recipe booklet that comes with the device, and while I have my own preferred family recipes for most things, I decided to give GE’s recipe a shot. The cinnamon bun recipe uses a Japanese milk bread style dough and I’m a big fan of this technique, so I was excited to start with this.

GE Profile Smart Stand MixerThe mixer absolutely made making homemade cinnamon buns, a breeze. The recipe is solid, the technique and instructions are flawless, and I was blown away with the finished product. The buns were tender, fluffy and delicious.

Trying 1-minute aïoli

Next up was GE’s one minute aïoli. I whipped this up for burger night instead of going store-bought. While I might be inclined to tweak the seasonings; a little more lemon and garlic… The technique worked flawlessly, and I had thick creamy freshly made mayonnaise.

I baked Potato & Herb buns

For a dinner party, I decided to use another of GE’s guided recipes. The ingredients for the potato and herb bun recipe seemed a bit unusual, including both instant, mashed potato flakes and skim milk powder, but the result was truly tasty and wonderfully tender buns. The steps for this involve using the batter, beater, or paddle attachment to bring the ingredients together initially, then you scrape down the bowl and use the dough hook to finish things off. After letting it rise, punching it down, then forming dough balls into a lovely wreath shape, these baked up wonderfully golden and were the perfect accompaniment to dinner. Plus they came together relatively quickly, even with rising time factored in.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer potato herb buns freshly baked.I quite enjoyed not having to overthink a bread recipe and monitor every step while hovering over the bowl. Being able to trust in my technology gave me time back in the kitchen to do other things like brush my chicken with butter, or do a bit of washing up.

Making Pavlova

The GE Profile smart mixer also made a pavlova that wowed my dinner guests one evening. Making a crispy-yet-creamy pavlova can be a delicate art, and using the GE guided recipe where each step was timed to perfection (and the mixer would stop automatically when it was finished certain steps) made it so easy, and resulted in a showstopper of a dessert.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer

On-device controls

The placement of the on device controls on the very top of the machine is either clever or frustrating, depending on where you are planning to keep your machine. If you want it to live underneath any overhead cabinets, it might prove impossible to access the dial. But if your mixer is going to live, sitting out somewhere in your kitchen, the top side dial is actually pretty convenient.

There’s a smooth rotating speed dial, which will choose among the 11 manual speed settings, there’s also a scale/timer button near the front, left and right toggle buttons and a centre start and pause button. You can also reverse the mixers direction or zero the scale using the button towards the back of the machine.

The controls are intuitive, and easy to interpret.

Using Voice Control: it works but not worth it

This mixer can also integrate with Google Assistant and Alexa for hands-free control using only your voice. I opted for Alexa and it was easy to get set up using the Alexa app and linking the GE Smart HQ ‘skill’.

When it comes to actually using the voice control, it’s not as helpful as you might think. For example, you can’t just ask Alexa to start the mixer; you need to be in the right ‘mode’ and that means you’re already using remote control via the app or a guided recipe. If you’re not Alexa will simply tell you, “stand mixer isn’t in a mode that accepts requests”.

Here’s what that means: If you’ve used the app to start the mixer, you can ask Alexa to stop it, but because, as I mentioned earlier, starting movement on the mixer need to be done manually by pushing a button the voice control seems to be extremely limited. And to be honest, it takes a lot more time to say ‘Alexa, turn stand mixer off’, than it does to just push the button to stop it. I was able to get Alexa to enact timed controls by saying, “turn the mixer off in two minutes,” but when I asked Alexa to adjust the speed she’d say, “stand mixer isn’t in a mode that accepts requests”.

As for what else you can do with voice control, I’m not quite sure. The tips and suggestions section of the GE app is blank.

Bottom line here: the smart voice control integration works, but it’s not really worth using, since it takes longer and you won’t know when it’s going to work and when it won’t.

Auto Sense Recipes: making butter

I’m going to spill a little bit of ink here about the usefulness of the Auto Sense recipes. During my testing there were only three such recipes available inside the GE app: They were for homemade butter, French meringue cookies, and how to cream butter and sugar for baking.

GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer reviewI opted to make fresh butter from heavy cream. This recipe is a bit of a strange choice, since butter is actually really easy to make without any technology necessary. Even schoolchildren often get an opportunity to make butter by passing around and shaking a mason jar filled with cream. I’ve made butter numerous times before in everything from a blender to a food processor, and another stand mixer. It’s easy enough to tell by looking when your cream has separated into butter and buttermilk. Having the machine turn off by itself when it detected this was novel, if unnecessary.

I’d say that after testing one of them, two of the three Auto Sense recipes don’t seem like they are really all that helpful. If I have more time with the mixer I’ll also try the auto sense meringue cookies.

Particularly at the price point this mixer is at, I was expecting more recipes and more assistance from the app if I’m being honest. This is a brand new to the market product, so I will trust more is coming, but for the sake of new users, I hope it’s soon.

Clean up

I find using a device like a mixer becomes more convenient the easier it is to clean. All of the parts and accessories of this mixer. Are dishwasher safe or can be hand washed in the sink. The stand mixer body can simply be wiped with a damp soapy cloth.

Overall review: GE Profile 7-Quart Smart Mixer with Auto Sense

Here’s my verdict: this is a beautiful machine, and it mixes like a dream. But there are a few features that may seem limited. I use my old workhorse KitchenAid stand mixer several times a week and love it, because it can handle tedious and tiring mixing and whipping chores easily for me, enticing me to bake things like bread and cakes at home. So is adding smarts to a stand mixer worth it?

Adding a built in scale, torque sensing and automatic timing features, as well as guided recipes I actually looked forward to making again (the GE cinnamon buns were baked up three times in my two weeks with my loaner mixer!) shows that this device has definite promise for serious home bakers. I think it absolutely delivers on its promises of adding meaningful smarts to a kitchen stalwart.

GE Profile Smart Stand MixerWhen it comes to the downsides, there aren’t currently a lot of automated recipes available in the app yet, but hopefully GE will be growing its database quickly. Voice control, while it works, isn’t as helpful as it could be since you need to be in the right hands-free mode. Plus what you can do with your voice seems like a short list.  The other major downside for me, was that this mixer is far too large and heavy to move easily around the kitchen. You should absolutely find a place for it to live for eternity on your countertop, since storing it away and lugging it out will likely make you cringe.

In short, I found the GE Profile Stand Mixer does make baking easier with more reliable results. I can definitely recommend it if you’re a regular baker looking for a stand mixer that can do more than average…. But with one caveat: it’s quite expensive at $999US, even when compared to a large capacity KitchenAid Pro version at $549-679US. It’s available only at Crate & Barrel and Canadian availability is unclear at the moment. With limited recipes and voice control seemingly in its infancy in this machine, you also wouldn’t be sorry if you waited for Gen 2. Or to see what KitchenAid might be cooking up by way of competition. Learn more from GE’s website.

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewThere’s a lot to consider when crafting the perfect cup of coffee: From choosing a machine that fits your budget and lifestyle to experimenting with different brewing techniques, temperatures, and grind sizes. But, if you just want your cup ready to go when you get up in the morning or if you need a quick afternoon pick me up, you might be considering something like the Cuisinart 14 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker. In this review I’ll look at the key features including its program ability, check out the design and size, and I’ll let you know if I can recommend it as a good overall automatic coffee maker for you.

Cuisinart Drip Coffee Maker
5

Summary

The Cuisinart Programmable Coffeemaker is ideal for those looking for a no-fuss machine that still offers smart adjustability.  It has all the basics you need to look out for in a drip-type coffee maker  at an affordable price.

Pros

  • Programmable brewing schedule
  • Adjustable carafe temperature (Low, Medium, High)
  • Brew strength control
  • Large capacity
  • Small footprint
  • Brews quickly
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean (carafe is dishwasher safe)

Cons

  • No water temperature control

What’s in the Box?

Let’s take a quick look at what you get with this coffee maker. For such a large volume machine, it has a rather small footprint. No space is wasted here. In the box you get:

  • Coffeemaker
  • 14-Cup glass Carafe
  • Measuring Scoop
  • Reusable Gold-Tone metal mesh Filter

While the coffee maker looks like it would be made of stainless steel, the construction is mostly plastic. No knock on Cuisinart for this as it does make the machine quite light, but just in case you think you’re getting something else…

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewThe top of the machine is flat and lifts up to reveal the cone filter on the inside. The lid opens quite wide and provides more than ample room for you to pour in fresh water. (This is a stark contrast to another coffee maker I recently reviewed where it was impossible to empty the carafe into the holding tank thanks to a very poor design.)

While the reusable filter is handy, you can also use a No. 4 paper filter if you prefer.

Set up

To get ready to brew, just plug the machine in and set the time of day. When you plug it in for the first time it will automatically start clock programming, and if you need to restart it, press and hold  the hour or minute button and wait for the clock to flash.

Install the included charcoal water filter by adding it to the ladder basket and slipping it into place in the back of the tank. Cuisinart recommends you run a pot of clean water though to flush the system before first use.

Specifications

Coffemaker type Drip
Filter type No. 4 Paper Filter or the Permanent Gold-Tone Filter
Brew Capacity 1-4 Cups
Carafe 14 Cups
Timer 24-hours

Programmable

The Cuisinart’s main feature is its programmable brewing schedule.  You can set it up the night before to have your cup ready by morning; no need to wait around while your coffee brews. Speaking of waiting, the machine has an auto-shutoff feature, so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on all day if you forget to switch it off.

You can also program how hot you want your carafe to stay: between 140 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit – so you can control how long your cup of Joe can stay at the perfect drinking temperature. I like a good hot cup of coffee so I chose and stuck with the highest temperature option.

Brew time

This coffee maker seems like it brews in a reasonable amount of time. On most days I make anywhere from 6 to 10 cups and I was able to get my coffee brewed within about 10 minutes.

14 Cup Capacity Carafe

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewThe machine comes with a 1-4 cup setting, so you can get it just right if you’re brewing for one or for a crowd. The manual for the Cuisinart drip coffee maker says pushing this button “adjusts the brewing process to maximize coffee flavour when brewing fewer than 5 cups,” but again it’s not specific about what it’s doing or what you can expect.

The 14-cup carafe has an ergonomic plastic handle, dripless spout and knuckle guard, so you can pour without burning your hands.

Pause and Serve

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewA feature I think is crucial in an automatic coffee maker is Pause and Serve. This allows you to remove the carafe while the coffee is brewing to pour yourself a cup without coffee leaking all over the machine. On this machine a small stopper locks into place if you pull out the carafe and re-open the flow when you return it. I found this feature worked really well and I never had coffee baking onto the heating plate.

Brew Strength Control

Depending on how strong you like your coffee, you can choose between regular and bold brew strength settings. That way, you don’t have to worry about over or under-extracting the flavor of your favorite beans. It appears the machine simply adjusts the flow of water over the coffee grounds; adding water more quickly for a week or brew or more slowly for a stronger brew. If I’m being honest I’m not completely sure how this works and the manual doesn’t explain. If you’ve got insight, I’d love to hear it in the comments below.

Permanent Gold-Tone Commercial-Style Filter

This Cuisinart Coffemaker also includes a permanent gold-tone filter that works by allowing more oils through to the finished coffee so you get more of that coffee flavor without that papery taste from other filter types. I find these permanent reusable filters often let in a lot of fine sediment which can lead to a muddy brew at the bottom of your cup. For that reason I usually swap out the reusable filter for paper filters.

Cleaning reminder + cleaning

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewThere’s a button on the front of the machine that will light up when it’s time to clean or de-calcify your coffee maker. Again, the manual doesn’t give you any idea of how many pots you can expect to brew before needing to clean. During my three weeks of testing I did not get any cleaning reminders.

It comes to how to clean your coffee machine, the carafe and lid and filters can either be hand washed or placed into the dishwasher in the top rack only. I ran all my pieces through the dishwasher repeatedly with no ill effects.

Overall review: Cuisinart Programmable Drip Coffeemaker

There’s something about the simplicity of an automatic drip coffee maker that makes it hard to beat. The Cuisinart Programmable Coffeemaker is ideal for those looking for a no-fuss machine that still offers smart adjustability.

It has all the basics you need to look out for in a drip-type coffee maker – size and capacity, adjustable carafe temperature, programmable brewing schedule, and a permanent filter that won’t require replacement – all at an affordable price.

So what are the downsides? In all honesty while I like to provide balance in all my reviews so you can consider all the possibilities, I’m having a hard time finding anything that is a major negative on this machine. It has all the important features for an automatic coffee maker and was easy to program to boot. While I suppose one might wish for adjustable water temperature during the brewing process, that seems like some thing that only true coffee connoisseur’s would really be after.

Cuisinart programmable drip coffee maker reviewIn short,  you’re looking for a reliable coffeemaker with smart features I can definitely recommend the Cuisinart  PerfecTemp 14 cup programmable coffee maker to you.

It sells for about $120US/$170CAD and you can get it, as I did, from Amazon.

This is not the first Cuisinart coffee maker I’ve used. Check out my review of a slightly older and more vintage styled Cuisinart model here or if you want to see how to get quick and easy espresso check out this Breville espresso maker review.
