Levoit Superior 6000S reviewA humidifier can solve many common problems in a home; from dry air, to excess static, and adding more humidity to the air you breathe can be both helpful and make life more comfortable too. I recently reviewed the Levoit Superior 6000S smart evaporative humidifier and you can check out that full review here on the channel (link). In this post we’re going to look at some of the most common questions you have about humidifiers and get the answers. I’d like to thank Levoit (which makes several quality humidifiers) for sponsoring this post. Though they have paid me for my time, they have not told me what I have to say or what I can’t say and I did the research myself, so you can consider these thoughts my own.

What does a humidifier do?

When I started researching humidifiers I started seeing many of the same questions come up again and again. Let’s start with the most obvious, what does a humidifier do?

A humidifier like the Superior 6000S is a device you fill with water, and it has a fan and often filters or wicks that help more moisture, or water (also called humidity) get into your home.

How do you know if you need a humidifier?

You could use an air quality monitor to tell you exactly what your humidity levels are; ideal humidity is between about 30 and 50%, and some smart thermostats can also display your reading.

If you don’t have a monitor there are a few telltale signs of a dry home:

  • Excess static electricity: if you’re getting shocks or giving them or your hair is nothing but flyaways, you may have a dry home.
  • Dry, itchy eyes, skin, chapped lips: if you’re using moisturizer and lip balms or moistening eye drops without any relief, dryness may be a problem.
  • Coughs or Nosebleeds: in some cases breathing dry air can cause nosebleeds or persistent coughing. Check with a doctor, of course, then investigate better humidity at home.

What are the different types of humidifier?

When it comes to choosing a humidifier there are four types:

  • Central humidifier: Part of central home heating or cooling systems.
  • Ultrasonic or Impeller (cool mist) humidifiers: These devices use sound waves or a special rotating disc to give off a cool mist. Levoit’s LV600S or Levoit OasisMist 450S Smart Humidifier are examples of this type of humidifier.
  • Steam vaporizer: Electricity creates hot steam inside that then cools before leaving the machine. While these can be good, you do need to take care not to spill them as the hot water can cause burns.
  • Evaporators: These devices use a fan to blow air through a wet wick, filter or belt. The Superior 6000S is an example of a smart evaporative humidifier.

How do you know what kind of humidifier you need?

Choosing a humidifier is actually quite easy. Instead of hiring a professional installer and adding a humidifier to your home’s heating or cooling system, you can instead choose one that’s all ready to go and needs just a few easy set up steps.

What type of water should be used in a humidifier?

Levoit Superior 6000S reviewOften distilled water is recommended for use in humidifiers, particularly those that lack filters like ultrasonic or cool mist humidifiers. But sourcing distilled water can be both expensive and an annoyance. That’s why it might be a better choice to find a humidifier that can use ordinary tap water and that has some level of filtration, like the Levoit Superior 6000S.

Which is better; cool or warm mist humidifier?

If you have children or pets in the home, a steam vaporizer or warm mist humidifier may not be a good choice for safety reasons. In that case a cool mist or evaporative humidifier may be a better option.     ll.

What’s the difference between a humidifier and air purifier?

In a word: water. Air purifiers simply run your air through a filtration system to remove allergens and impurities, while a humidifier’s job is to add water into the air and release that water as either a visible mist or invisible water vapor.

Do I need a humidifier year round?

While it’s common to hear more about humidifier use in the winter, there are benefits to running a humidifier year-round. Particularly if you use air conditioning in the summer, indoor air can be dry, and it may be beneficial to have a humidifier running all year.

Of course if you live in a drier climate, a humidifier may be needed constantly. In this case a larger format evaporative humidifier like Levoit’s Superior 6000S would be an ideal choice for humidifying a whole home without requiring constant fill-ups.

Should I get a humidifier with mist or water vapor?

Even if it’s visible as it exists in the machine, mist will quickly evaporate and become invisible almost immediately. So, whether you can see the water vapor emerging from your humidifier or not, it’s still getting into the air, so both types of humidifier will be helpful.

Where should I place a humidifier?

Generally speaking you can place a humidifier anywhere in your home; many people may use a basement or laundry room area as a convenient location. Wherever you choose to place your device, ensure there is good clearance and circulation all the way around the unit and it’s not pushed into a corner or under a shelf where water could condense. The Superior 6000S is unique in that it is a whole home humidifier – so no matter where it is placed in your house, it can humidify up to 3000 sq ft.

What is the healthiest type of humidifier?

Generally speaking a clean humidifier is a healthy humidifier, so ensure you do regular cleaning and maintenance, no matter which type of humidifier you choose.

Even so, ultrasonic humidifiers may require more maintenance because they typically lack filters that can absorb dust, mold or impurities—that’s why they must be kept clean.

Evaporative humidifiers use a safe, cool mist and employ filters or wicks, which may make them a better choice for allergy sufferers, and those looking for lower maintenance options. They are also better at minimizing mold and build-up.

How do I maintain my humidifier?

Levoit Superior 6000S reviewThere are a few things that will ensure your humidifier not only has a long lifespan but also avoids pushing impurities or microorganisms into your air.

Follow the manufacturers recommendations for how often your humidifier should be cleaned, and with what types of cleansers—in some cases this may be as frequently as daily for ultrasonic humidifiers which lack filters.

With my Superior 6000S, Levoit recommends changing the water and cleaning the machine every 3 days, and if it’s not being used, not to leave water sitting in the humidifier.

If you have hard water or lime scale buildup in your humidifier you can use white vinegar, citric acid or a special limescale remover to clean the inside of your unit. If a pinkish or orangey biofilm has developed, or it you feel more cleaning power is needed, use soap and water plus a soft bristled brush.

Ensure all the parts of your humidifier dry thoroughly between cleanings.

Lastly, be sure to replace the filters or wicks regularly, especially if you notice any musty smell or mold growth. The Superior 6000S has an indicator that will light up when it’s time to change the wick filters, and the app will let you know too, taking the guesswork out of replacement.

I’ve been really happy with my Levoit Superior 6000S and can recommend it since it’s a great way to increase the humidity in the home. Don’t forget to check out the full Superior 6000S review here, and visit Levoit’s website for current pricing or promotions. Here's our guide to setting up Google Home devices in YOUR home.

Google Home max smart home speaker digital assistant review how to google home speaker assistant what why how to

Comparing Amazon’s Echo Show to Hub, there was a time when home automation was a niche hobby reserved for the tech-savvy. However, it’s become more of a commonplace reality these days thanks to a well-implemented integration by industry players like Google. The Google Home, for example, has expanded from its early days as a fairly straightforward smart speaker system to an entire ecosystem that works with a ton of other devices, from smart lights to smart thermostats.

So, while it might sound like a lot of work setting this up, it’s actually much easier than you’d expect. If you’re ready to go all-in with your home automation system, start by heading over to your phone’s Google Home app and following these steps:

Choose your Google Home device.

Google, Nest, Mini, review, smart home, speaker

Whether you’re going for the O.G. smart speaker or you’re going for a more specialist device like smart lights or thermostat, you’re going to need some hardware to start your home automation journey.

Plug in your Google Home Device.

Google, Nest, Mini, review, smart home, speaker

Once you have your device on hand, plug it in and switch it on. Once it’s powered up, you can carry on with the rest of these steps on your smartphone’s Google Home app or via the device’s touch screen if it has one.

Download, install, and open your Google Home app.

Google home google assistant how to august lock

Once you’re on the app, log in to your Google account while connected to your home Wi-Fi connection. If it’s your first time setting up a Google Home device, you’ll have to tap on Create Home and give it a nickname to help you stay organized as you add more devices later. Tap on your Home, then Next.

Look for your device.

Tap on Devices, Add, then New Device. Look for the Google Home device you’d like to add. (Google Nest Speakers, Google TV, Chromecast, Nest Camera, Nest Thermostats, and many thousands of third-party Google Home-enabled devices)

Now you’re all set up.

The setup between most Google Home devices is largely the same, with some devices deviating because of the nature of the device itself. For example, Google Nest Hub devices have their own screens from which you can log in, while other devices, such as the Nest speakers, require you to use your smartphone for the setup process.

The Google Nest Hub is available from Amazon and Walmart, and the Google Nest Hub Max is available from Walmart.

The Google Nest WiFi Pro is available from Amazon.

The Google Pixel Tablet is available from Amazon.

Frequently Asked Questions

google home philips hue smart light how to what to say

Q: What exactly is Google Home?

A: Google Home used to refer to Google’s smart speaker lineup. However, over time, evolved to include other smart devices such as smart thermostats, Google TVs, Chromecasts, and other third-party devices.

Q: Do I need a Google account to set up a Google Home device?

A: To get all that Google Home goodness flowing, you’ll need a Google account. If you’re an Android user, you likely already have one (score!). If not, setting up a Google account is easy as pie. And it won’t just give you access to Google Home but a whole host of Google services.

Q: Will Google Home listen to my personal conversations?

A: Nope. Google Home only starts recording when it hears the ‘magic words’, which are “Okay Google” or “Hey Google.” Your private chats are safe, but remember, it may hear all your shower singing sessions!

Q: Does Google Home need a constant internet connection?

google, nest, hub, screen, assistant, smart home, remove, voice, control, speaker, tv, video, review, how to

A: Google Home devices use Wi-Fi signals to communicate with each other. So, certain tasks and commands, such as asking Google Assistant for the weather, may not work properly if the internet connection is disrupted.

Q: Can I use Google Home if I have an iPhone?

A: Google Home works just fine with iOS devices. Just download the Google Home app from the Apple App Store, and you’re good to go. So, keep that iPhone in your pocket, and give a round of applause for cross-tech harmony!

Apple Homepod and homepod mini how to.Apple’s HomePod and HomePod Mini are the Cupertino giant’s Siri-enabled smart home speakers. They’re designed to work with your iOS devices, Apple Music, and HomeKit, but they’re also Siri-enabled, so you can use them as a voice assistant.

What’s the difference between HomePod and HomePod Mini?

On the surface, the key difference between the standard HomePod and the HomePod Mini is size. The good old HomePod is the bigger of the two, with a size that says, “I’m here to deliver sound, and I mean business.” In contrast, the HomePod Mini is more of a miniature version, packing a punch in a much smaller package. But don’t let the size fool you. Both versions kick out great sound. Sure, the HomePod offers deeper bass and more complex soundscapes, but the HomePod Mini holds its own with still-impressive audio for its teeny size and lower price.

How to Set up Apple HomePod

In typical Apple fashion, setting these babies up is a breeze. Just follow these steps:

  1. Plug in your HomePod or HomePod Mini.
  2. Bring your iPhone or iPad close to the device. You’ll see a pop-up showing a picture of your spiffy new HomePod. Tap ‘Set Up’.
  3. You’ll then select which room your HomePod will grace with its presence.
  4. Now enable or disable ‘Personal Requests’ – this controls whether your HomePod can read messages, add reminders, or create notes when your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network. Choose wisely unless you enjoy living on the edge.
  5. Finally, transfer settings from your Apple account to your HomePod. These include Wi-Fi settings, Apple ID, and Siri preferences. Voila! Your smart home just got smarter.

Does HomePod work with Android?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to set up any of the HomePod devices without an iOS device. So, ensure you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch before clicking that ‘add to cart’ button.

HomePods as Apple HomeKit Hub

A home hub is necessary to use your HomeKit or Matter accessories while you’re away from the house, or to share control of your accessories with family, and automate your accessories to do what you want, when you want. You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Apple Home app. If you’re looking to use the HomePods as a hub for your Apple HomeKit, then you’re in luck. There aren’t any additional steps in getting this set up. You just need to ensure the following requirements are met:

  • iCloud Keychain and Two-Factor Authentication are turned on in your Apple HomeKit’s primary iCloud account.
  • The HomePod is designated as a primary user, not just an invited guest to the Apple HomeKit.
  • The HomePod and iOS devices connected to them are updated to the latest software versions

Should I get Apple HomePod?

Let’s not sugarcoat things, folks. These Apple HomePods have many great features, but they’ve got a few downsides, too. They sound phenomenal and integrate seamlessly with other Apple products, and Siri is getting smarter with every software update.

However, if you’re an Android user or heavily invested in another ecosystem, the HomePods kind of give you the cold shoulder. They typically don’t play well with other systems, such as Google Home and Alexa systems. Plus, they aren’t exactly the cheapest smart speakers on the block, either.

In the end, the HomePods are just like iPhones – beautifully designed pieces of technological hardware behind Apple’s walled garden of an ecosystem. If you’re an Apple user, then they’re the best smart speakers you can buy for casual music listening.

SwitchBot Curtain 3 Review

In this post I’ll take a look at what you get with this device and how it works with existing curtains. I’ll explore if you can use it with different types of drapes, how you install it, and whether it actually works as advertised. I’d like to say thank you to SwitchBot for sponsoring this post. Their support helps us keep the blog running so we’re grateful. Through they have paid for my time they have not told me what I have to say or cannot say in this article so you can consider these thoughts my own.

Click here to see the Curtain 3 in action in my YouTube Short.

What is SwitchBot Curtain 3?

SwitchBot Curtain 3 consists of a small motor that rolls across your curtain rod and pulls your existing curtains along for the ride. With just a couple of parts and components, and a rechargeable motor, setting it up is actually quite easy.

What types of curtains does Switchbot work on?

Switchbot Curtain 3 review Switchbot is made to manage several different types and styles of curtains. You first choose whether your curtain is held up by a traditional cylindrical rod, or a U-shaped rail. It will even work on extendable or uneven rods too. (An i-rail version is in the works also.)

SwitchBot Curtain 3 can manage all the big styles of drapes including tab-top drapes, back-tab curtains, and curtains held in place by grommets, or rings. To check if your curtains will be compatible, click here to access SwitchBot’s’ Compatibility Checker.

What’s in the box?

Switchbot Curtain 3 review When you unpack the box the parts will no doubt look quite unfamiliar. But they are actually very cleverly designed and go together easily.

In the box you get:

  • Main motor unit
  • A pair of hooks with rollers and metal arms
  • Plastic Clips
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Magnetic pad
  • Reset tool and wet wipe
  • A Bead Fixer (used for grommeted curtains)

How to install SwitchBot Curtain 3

First things first; download the SwitchBot app. This is how you’ll control your curtains. Either sign up for an account or sign into an existing account.

I have tab top curtains in my office, and my curtain rod has a centre support, so for this installation I needed two Curtain 3 motors; one for each curtain panel.
For this installation I also need to use the clips provided to help install the SwitchBot Curtain 3. The clips have essentially three parts; a lever which opens the mouth of the clip up, and an upper and lower jaw to grip the curtain fabric/tabs. You’ll lift the top portion of the clip up; and it does require quite a bit of force to open. I was afraid of breaking it, but the clips are actually quite solid.

Switchbot Curtain 3 review

One of the clips atop a drapery tab.

Once open, you’ll have the clip bite down on the very top section of one of the tabs, creating a smooth surface for the curtain to slide on while sitting on the rod. The clips also help prevent the tops of the drapes from getting caught up in the motor arms.

For the first clip (on the first tab that will go towards the centre of the curtain rod), you’ll face the jaws of the clip towards the centre of the rod. Then attach two more clips on the next two tabs in line, but this time have them bite away from the centre of the rod. The end of the clips essentially have small bracket-spacers that help the Curtain 3 push them along the top of the rod.

Hidden placement

Switchbot Curtain 3 review With the clips attached it’s time to add the hooks and the motor. You’ll be positioning it between the first and second tab on your drapes and the motor will be placed behind the curtain panel so it’s a bit hidden. Hook one arm over the curtain rod, then clip it to the motor. Clip the other arm on the other side of the motor and then lock it into place. Make sure the SwitchBot logo is facing into the room (but behind your curtain panel).
Finally you’ll place a thin magnet pad on the middle of the rod so SwitchBot knows where to stop.

Do the other panel.

With clips and motors placed, you’ll run a test. The app will open up the curtains so you can check that everything is working properly. Once you confirm, you’re ready to use your curtains.

SwitchBot app: easy to navigate

The app is quite simple and easy to navigate. You can simply tap a virtual button to open the curtains fully, close them fully, or leave them somewhere in between.

Does SwitchBot Curtain 3 really work?

I’m glad to report that in my review, SwitchBot Curtain 3 works surprisingly well! I was impressed with how easy it is to set up and how easy it is to use with all types of curtains. I was initially sceptical that the unit would work with my flimsier tab-top drapes, but it’s been flawless and I’ve now got much easier access to opening and closing the drapes.

Anytime operation & automation

It’s possible to set your drapes on a daily schedule, or to purchase a SwitchBot remote control. You can also control just one side or your dual curtain panels too by accessing the Sync Control page (which is found in the bottom of the Switchbot app after you tap on your curtains).

Voice control: supports almost everything!

Curtain 3 supports integration with all the major smart home services including Apple Home Kit/Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and IFTTT. I opted for linking Google and was able to simply ask Google to ‘open the curtains’.

Does SwitchBot Curtain work with Alexa?

With other smart home commands you may need to revise the phrasing. For example, ‘Alexa, ask SwitchBot to open curtains’ .

Battery: How long does SwitchBot Curtain last?

The battery on a fully charged Curtain 3 will last about 8 months, depending how many times each day you’re using it.Switchbot Curtain 3 review

Is SwitchBot curtain loud?

I’m glad to report that in my testing the Curtain 3 device operates almost completely silently. You could easily use this device while someone was sleeping and not wake them.

Optional Accessories for Curtain 3

In addition to the SwitchBot remote control, there is an array of helpful accessories you can use with your Curtain 3.

SwitchBot Remote
To open or close your curtains without needing your phone. This is handy to keep on a table near your curtains so that they can be controlled by others in the family or by visitors.

SwitchBot Solar Panel

Switchbot Curtain 3 review This handy compact solar panel plugs into the bottom of your Curtain 3 motor (for now, it only works with Curtain 3) and absorbs sunlight to keep your motor charged 24/7. It’s designed for sunnier spaces, but can handle some measure of shade too. Because it hangs from the motor and will be on the backside of your drapes, you won’t see it from inside the home. Clever! The long cable supporting the solar panel is also helpful for those who’ve placed the drapes higher up on the wall, like me.

SwitchBot Hub 2

SwtichBot makes plenty of other smart home gadgets too.  SwitchBot Hub 2 allows you to get instant information about your home. With a built in temperature sensor and humidity meter you’ll always know what’s happening in your space.

SwitchBot Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer

If you want to keep tabs on the air temperature or humidity around your home, whether indoors or out, this extremely compact meter (about the size of a USB thumb drive) can be placed almost anywhere and provide up to the minute data. I placed mine outside my house so I could keep tabs on the weather more easily and more precisely.

Overall review

Overall I think this is a great product and very well executed. It solves a problem many homeowners have, and is ideal for drapes that are not easy to reach, are placed up very high, or that are blocked by furniture.
SwitchBot Curtain 3 is extremely easy to install, and works amazingly well at automating part of my home I never thought could be. I really can’t find any downsides to the device, unless you might be concerned with the device potentially being partially visible on the curtain rod.

I can highly recommend Switchbot Curtain 3 if you have blinds or drapes you would like to automate… and at a fraction of the cost of buying dedicated smart blinds!

Pricing for the different components varies depending on if you buy them individually or as part of a bundle. The Switchbot curtain three sells for about $118CAD/$89USD Canadian for a single unit, or $225CAD/$169USD for a 2-pack. Adding a solar panel is about $34CAD/$24USD. You can get them from SwitchBot’s website or from Amazon. or Walmart.

You can get a 10% off Coupon Code with Promo Code XMCURTAIN3 (valid till Nov 30th and available for Amazon and Shopfiy on Curtain 3, Hub2, Remote, Solar Panels) or use my special Coupon Code 10UPFON7ZDU6AZ.

Whats the difference between Nespresso original and VertuoIf you are considering a more convenient coffee solution, you’re likely looking into Nespresso machines. These machines use special coffee pods to create a variety of espresso-based drinks and some will also make regular coffee. But what is the difference between these two systems and which one is ultimately better? I went hands-on to compare to try them out side by side to see.

Nespresso Original versus Nespresso Virtuo: How To Choose, what’s the difference?

Specifically, I’m reviewing  Nespresso original versus virtuo here in this video, but I’ve reviewed many more models. Both machines make espresso, the Vertuo line is also designed to brew regular coffees to – all in the same machine.

Nespresso launched the VertuoLine in about 2014 as a way to lure North American coffee drinkers, who are less about espressos than they are about full size coffees.

Coffee pods and capsules: what’s the difference?

First, let’s look at the difference between Verturo and original Nespresso pods. The original Nespresso pods are small and narrow and come in one size only (since they’re really meant for espresso), while the Nespresso Vertuo pods are wide and round and may differ in height depending on what’s inside. With an original pod you can make espresso, double espresso or add water for an Americano. Vertuo coffee pods have special barcodes on the pod that carry specific instructions for how each coffee is to be extracted. The Virtuo lineup offers drinks in five sizes, from a single espresso, to double espresso, a 5 ounce gran luongo/Americano (150ml), a 230ml/8 oz ‘mug’ coffee to a 14 oz Alto coffee.

Milk or no milk?

Let’s move on to another differentiator: milk or no milk?

One of the key differences between Nespresso Virtuo vs original set ups is that none of the Vertuo models come with built-in milk frothers, while Nespresso Original does offer machines that will handle the milk, like the automatic Lattissima here.
But you can bundle a Vertuo with Nespresso’s popular Aeroccino frother —often at a discounted price. When it comes to Choice and availability, The Nespresso Original machine has a far bigger selection of capsules. And because the patent on the capsules has expired, you can get them everywhere – and even fill reusable ones with your own coffee.
nespresso vertuo next, Original, whats the difference, whyhiVertuo capsules by contrast are available only from Nespresso because they need a proprietary barcode to be recognized by the Vertuo machine.

Nespresso Vertuo vs Original: Drink options and sizes

Time to talk drink sizing…Nespresso VertuoLine capsules come in three different sizes, so larger drinks can be as strong as smaller ones. In total those three sizes will make 5 different coffee drinks. Nespresso Original Pods only come in one size and are meant to make espresso, double espresso or a luongo.
Now, you can make a bigger coffee with an original pod by adding more water, but it is obviously more diluted… something you don’t get with the Vertuo.
With that said, both the Nespresso and Virtuo machines let you permanently alter the drink size to your tastes – yes even the Nespresso Vertuo capsules with the special barcode can be easily reprogrammed to make the drink you want. I’ve got videos here on the channel that show you how to do that on both types of machines.
I have a how to video that can show you how to do this, right here on the blog.

Nespresso Original Machine vs Vertuo: Coffee quality

Crema is a hot word in coffee circles… Both Original and Vertuo machines and their coffee pods give you a beautiful crema on top of the coffee which a lot of folks really love.
Some say the Vertuo Nespresso capsules produce a thicker layer of crema, and I guess that’s true, but it begins to dissipate almost immediately since it’s mainly a product of all the air in the spinning process. For me, I’d rather a better coffee than taller coffee foam, so I’m not as wowed by that, personally.

I’ve tried dozens of coffee pods from both lineups and I can say there’s lots to choose from and you’ll be able to find something you really like. I find the coffee fresh, delicious, hot and tasty.
nespresso vertuo next, Original, whats the difference, whyhi

Which machine is stronger: Nespresso Vertuo or Original

Brewing pressure is another hot topic, since that helps make a creamier drink.
Despite the seeming higher end feel and more tech smarts of the Vertuo experience, the Vertuo machines use exactly the same amount pressure to extract coffees as the Original line does; you can generally expect 19 bars from both sets of machines.
When it comes to Brew time… Perhaps not surprising but the Original lineup tends to produce faster results. This is likely because original line drinks are smaller.

Coffee Temperature

Coffee should be hot, right? Not so fast. We tend to brew our coffee with boiling water since the temperature can help extract flavours and oils a little easier, but very hot water can make coffee bitter.
You’re probably familiar with cold brew coffee, which essentially replaces heat with time: letting ground coffee sit in cold water for up to 24 hours to extract the same flavors—without the bitterness and acrid taste. For that reason, the Vertuo line uses a slightly lower temperature when making coffee; and here all those rotations help saturate the grounds faster, so not as much heat is needed.
Now for some people this is a problem; coffee that comes out of the machine at any temperature other than volcanic may not be as enjoyable. I guess your temperature and taste preferences are probably very individual. So whether a slightly cooler but more flavourful and less bitter brew will be enjoyable for you is definitely a matter of taste.
For me, I found there were still some Vertuo coffee roasts that did taste bitter, and at the same time I didn’t really notice a huge difference in temperature.

Nespresso Original versus Nespresso Vertuo: which is better?

So…Which to choose? The Original or the slightly more advanced Vertuo line?
Now you know how the key features of Original and Vertuo stack up against each other. In my opinion you should buy a Nespresso Original machine if you want it for espresso or espresso-based drinks. You’ll pay less for the machine and the Nespresso capsules, and you’ll have way more espresso pod choices.
Buy a Nespresso Vertuo machine if you’re more of a coffee drinker and you want the option of making espresso and coffee from the same machine. With the barcoded capsule brewing system, the VertuoLine makes brewing any style and size of drink foolproof, but it is adjustable.

For me, since I want it mainly for espresso, I’m going to stick with my Nespresso Original machine, but I think both of these systems have their benefits. The choice is up to you.

I’d love to hear which line you chose and why, so share your story in comments below.

Nespresso Original and Vertuo are both available from Amazon and Walmart.

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewPeople who live with allergies or health challenges know the importance of an air purifier, but what about the rest of us? While most of us think we have clean air in our homes, the truth is things like radon gas, ultrafine particles and even toxic chemicals like formaldehyde can and do exist in our homes, brought in with things like new furniture, carpeting and even some building or renovation products. But of course if you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, you probably don’t know it’s there. That’s where something like an air purifier comes in; it can clean the air of junk you didn’t know was lurking. In this review in my home I’m trying out the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde. I’ll look at what it’s designed to do, what makes it unique (and the ‘big’ in its name is a huge clue) how I integrated it into my home how it seems to work and if overall I can recommend it to you.

Dyson has made a name for itself by revolutionizing air movement technology. Their fans and vacuums quickly became the standard for quality and innovation. Today, we look at a new offering in the air movement and filtering side of things: the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde. Air quality is always a concern, as it directly affects our health and well-being. Knowing that there’s a system in place to remove allergens and particulate matter goes a long way in providing comfort and assurance in the home or office.

Let’s dive deeper into the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde.

Yep, it’s BIG: Size & weight

It’s in the name, but it’s worth starting with here, since even I wasn’t prepared for how big this purifier truly is. The Dyson purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde is 830 mm tall (32 inches) and 415 mm wide (16 inches.) It weighs 11.9 kilograms (26 pounds) and has a set of wheels that are not visible when the unit is upright. The wheels are designed for hard flooring, making it easy to move your purifier around. Its cord is 1.8 m long (70 inches.)

The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde has been designed to work from the corner of a room, but Dyson recommends it be at least one metre away from the wall, which because of its massive size again poses more challenges with placement in smaller spaces.
Of course because it is designed for larger spaces and is Dyson’s largest format purifier in the lineup, space shouldn’t really be an issue; it’s made to purifier bigger rooms and home up to up to 100sqm / 1,076sqft.

It’s also extremely unique looking and made up of two parts, the base, where the filters are and the top which I’ve taken to calling the bowl, which is where the airflow exits.

There’s also a magnetic remote control in the box too.

Set up & assembly

There is some minor assembly required but the good news is that it’s easy. Once you unpack the two large components from their box, they essentially just fit together.

Filters

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewOn the inside are the filters; the outer layer, wrapped around the inner filter like a blanket is the activated carbon filter. The inner core is a glass fibre HEP filter.

The big and quiet formaldehyde has a HEPA h13 grade filter, which captures up to 99% of particles as small as .3 microns. It also has an activated carbon filter to remove odor and gases.

Dyson recommends replacing the H13 grade HEPA filter after using it for up to five years or sooner. The activated carbon filter should be replaced every two years or sooner if required.

Further, this unit has a catalytic filter which you can’t see, that traps and breaks down formaldehyde molecules and turns them into tiny, imperceptible amounts of water and carbon dioxide/CO2. It claims this filter will last a lifetime.

What you get

Powerful Pull

This unit is made by Dyson, so you know it’s not messing around. The big and quiet formaldehyde unit is designed to filter air even for large spaces, so it can pull air from up to 32 ft away, filter it, and send it back out. It does all of this and only 56 decibels at full speed. It’s designed to be placed about 1 M from a wall and probably in the corner of the room. You’ll want to set it up so the air being pushed back out can travel across the room or along the wall. Due to the amount of air that it’s moving around and the fact that it’s made for larger spaces, you may find it impacts airflow and creates a breeze in the home. Depending on the type of year that may or may not be welcome.

Removes Formaldehyde: but why?

Since it’s in the name, it’s no surprise the Big+Quiet Formaldehyde pulls formaldehyde from the air.

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewTo help you understand how and why formaldehyde is a problem, I’m going to pull fro my previous blog on this topic:

First, let’s get to What is Formaldehyde? And why do I need to remove it from my home?

Formaldehyde is a chemical that is used in building materials and household products. It can also be found in materials made of pressed wood, such as particleboard and plywood, as well as glues and adhesives.Formaldehyde is also used as a disinfectant and germicide and can be found in wallpapers, some fabrics, fireplaces and vehicle exhaust.

Laboratories and mortuaries often use formaldehyde for its preservative qualities. Formaldehyde gets into our homes mainly through what’s called off-gassing, where construction or renovation materials, furniture, cabinets and household products slowly release formaldehyde over time.So what’s the problem? The Government of Canada calls formaldehyde an irritant, saying exposure to high concentrations can cause burning sensations in the eyes, nose and throat. Formaldehyde is also classified as “carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

So that’s my Bill Nye the science guy explanation… and it’s clear we’d probably rather not have formaldehyde accumulating in our homes.

Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde: what else it removes

What else does it remove from your air? It also removes pollen, pet dander, mold, and dust, anything smaller than 10 microns (which is practically microscopic). It’s also effective against smoke allergens and bacteria, as well as cigarettes and candle smoke.

It also claims to be effective against VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), including aerosols and Air fresheners, and any off-gassing from things like plywood fiberboard paint, wallpaper, and household cleaning products.

Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde: see what it’s seeing

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewThe unit is able to track its effectiveness in each of those ranges and it will display it both on the machine and on the companion Dyson app so you can see how well it’s dealing with smaller particulate matter like smoke, larger particular matter like pollen, and the VOCs.

Monitoring and App

This unit comes with an app called My Dyson, which handles all the unit’s features, including directional airflow, changing the oscillation setting, and increasing or decreasing airflow. You’ll also be able to monitor how effectively the big and quiet formaldehyde is cleaning the air. An auto feature allows the unit to detect and clean the air as it sees fit, increasing and decreasing power as needed.

Settings, Airflow and Noise: my experience

This air purifier allows you to make lots of adjustments depending on what you think you need. You can adjust the different airflow speeds from level one all the way to level 10. I can say that even on level two, there is still a decent amount of noticeable airflow coming from the unit; enough to cool you off if you’re passing by. Even so, at lower levels the big and quiet is silent.

The airflow comes out of the top bowl in three different directions. It will essentially cut straight across the room horizontally towards you, or it will aim the air up higher at different angles into the room; from 0° to 25° to 50°.

You can also run the unit on auto mode which will let the amount of particles in the air determine whether it cranks up or runs lower. There is also a timer which will shut the purifier off automatically, and a night mode which helps it to run even quieter. Essentially that’s it when it comes to settings.

Using Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewWith this device set up and running there is really nothing you will ever need to do except keep those filters changed every few years. You can use the Dyson app to check on the particle levels in your home and the app will also show you the current temperature in the room, relative humidity, and give your air quality a colour-coded score from green which is good to red which is very poor. The colour coding is very easy to understand at a glance, and if you want more granular data you can see that too.

The app will break down specific particulate matter by different type if you want to know exactly what it’s finding in your home.

Does it work?

I’ve said it more than once in air purifier reviews that it is extremely difficult for me to make a determination whether or not this device is actually working. I don’t have access to an air quality testing lab or a microbiology biologist so I’m essentially taking Dyson at its word that it’s devices are doing the job they say they will.

For the most part during my testing my air quality stayed quite good and I didn’t have any red flags. I can say however that when we have been in wildfire season in the past, that several Dyson purifiers I have tested do detect and filter smoke that seeps into the house. It shows up in the particle readings and the purifiers will work harder once they start detecting those contaminants in the house.

Overall review: Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde

Overall if you are in great need of a large format purifier that isn’t going to disrupt the house, this is a great place to start. It has a lot of pluses particularly if you live with an allergy suffer or someone with health concerns. But for the average homeowner, this device is going to be both overkill and not versatile enough to justify the price tag.

Let’s recap the pros and cons as I see them…

Dyson Big + Quiet formaldehyde reviewI do think this purifier looks really cool, and it was easy to get set up. The app connectivity works very well, and I think it’s very handy that it has wheels too more easily move it around. It provides good data about what it’s detecting in my home which does help provide a level of comfort. While it’s also not billed as a fan, on higher fan speeds it definitely gets a breeze going in my space. And as the name also hints, it is truly very quiet in operation.

What are the downsides? As the name suggests, this is a very large device and it does require a lot of space for optimal placement. I also found the controls were kind of limited; aside from 10 fan speeds and the three airflow angles. I also found myself as the first snow fell on Calgary wishing that it also had heating capabilities too. If that is something you’re looking for, I could also steer you in the direction of the Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde which I’ve also reviewed here on the channel. It is also an extremely expensive device, particularly when you’re not getting either heating or cooling.

I look at this device and I think it could actually be so much more. Yes, add in the heating and cooling for sure, but if you’re going to make some thing that’s as big as a piece of furniture why not go all the way and get creative? Put a great sounding speaker into the base and now you’ve got some thing that might be more worthy of taking up all that real estate.

To be clear I think the Dyson big and quiet absolutely delivers on its name and promises and there are no surprises here. You’re definitely getting what you pay for. If you’ve got the funds for this, you won’t be disappointed. But if this is priced outside of your budget for now, I can recommend the smaller and less expensive Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde (click to read the full review) as a worthy alternate—that’s the one I have in my home and I use it every day, all year round. (You’ll pay just about $849USD/$999CAD for it.)

The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde sells for about $999USD/$1299CAD. Shop the Dyson purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde on Amazon or Best Buy and on Dyson’s website. You can also shop the Hot+Cool Formaldehyde too as a great alternative from Dyson or Amazon.

HP Sprocket Studio Plus full review

In this  Hp Sprocket Studio review, I’ll try out the printer and see how it works, what the photos look like, how easy the app is to navigate, and any special tools it uses. I’ll wrap things up by telling you if I think it’s a good photo printer for you. I’d also like to say thanks to HP Sprocket for sponsoring this video; while they are paying for my time, they have not told me what I have to say or what I can’t say and I got to test the printer how I wanted to, so you can consider these thoughts my own.

Roughly a year ago, I reviewed the HP Sprocket Mini photo printer and had plenty of nice things to say about it. The biggest drawback to that printer is that it makes only mini prints ( 2 × 3 inches). Way back when, I also reviewed the original HP Sprocket Studio which did handle the more popular 4 × 6 sized photo paper, but that printer’s biggest downside was the elongated design which made it more difficult to store and transport.

I’m glad to say the new HP Sprocket Studio Plus gives you the best of bigger photos, with some design improvements that make it even better than the original.

What is the HP Sprocket Studio Plus?

Think of the HP Sprocket Studio Plus as a miniaturized version of a traditional printer. Like its Studio predecessor, the Studio Plus relies on special ink cartridges rather than ZERO-INK (ZINK) technology that requires special thermal paper.

What’s in the Box?

HP Sprocket studio plus components

The HP Sprocket Studio Photo printer comes with a tester bundle of 10 Sprocket Studio Plus paper sheets and an ink cartridge (you can also opt for a bundle with a bigger pack of photo paper and extra ink too). You also get a power cord, since the printer lacks an internal battery.

The nice thing about the HP Sprocket Studio printer is how compact it looks when you aren’t using it. The paper can hide in the tray, which stacks neatly on top of the printer itself. The printer is very travel-friendly.

Setting up HP Sprocket Studio Plus Photo Printer

Before you get too far, download and sign up for or sign into the free HP Sprocket app, which is iOS and Android friendly, in order to print your photos.

To set up the HP Sprocket Studio, you just plug in the adapter and remove the top tray, which is actually the paper holder. Pull the end of the tray out and flip it over, then slip the included paper into the tray. The printer can hold up to 18 photo sheets at a time.

Next, load the ink roller cartridge; open the side door and you can see exactly where it slides in.

HP Sprocket Studio Plus Review Then, open the door in the front of the printer, and slot the end portion of the paper tray into the opening. From there, you can turn it on and proceed to linking the printer wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I was ready in seconds.

The app will guide you through the entire printer setup and pairing process and also serve as a handy and easy to navigate editing platform for making photo edits and improvements before printing.

Consider the Bluetooth pairing process as a temporary step, as it paves the way to pairing the printer to your Wi-Fi network so various devices with the HP Sprocket app can use the printer without the Bluetooth range limitations. The Bluetooth connectivity is still useful when using the printer on the go—if you’re using it at a café or at school where you may not always have the Wi-Fi password.

Printing Experience

HP Sprocket studio plus review

Once you are finished with the app setup process, printing with the HP Sprocket Printer Studio Plus is as easy as choosing the photo, making any optional edits, and let the printer work its magic.

Seeing the printer slide the paper back and forth while laying color layer after layer and slowly seeing your chosen digital image come to life is quite mesmerizing.

It takes roughly 1 minute 20 seconds minutes to print a full photo, and I’m glad to say this is significantly faster than older HP photo printers, which took about 2 minutes. You can safely touch the photo right away, since the ink won’t smudge.

Photo quality of HP Sprocket Studio photo printer is outstanding and it will  rival professional photo printing services. The prints are, as HP Sprocket promises, bright, glossy photos that are smudge-proof, instantly dry, water-resistant, and on thick, tear-resistant genuine photo paper.

Once you tear off the perforated edges (despite the fact these are tearaway perforated edges, they do seem to break off rather cleanly and give the photos a tidy look), you get a nice borderless 4 × 6 photo which you can then insert in a craft project, photo album or picture frame.

Fun with photos

HP Sprocket Studio Plus is more than just a printer; it’s a design marvel too.

HP Sprocket Studio Plus Review The HP Sprocket app lets you do all kinds of things with your photos. You can print multiple copies at once, as well as do simple photo tweaks and improvements. (You can adjust almost all photo settings including brightness, contrast, and saturation right inside the app before you hit print.) There’s also an array of different filters, and you can add fun and colourful borders, plus stickers and emojis as well as text too. The personalization options are many and there’s a lot of fun in choosing the embellishments—for you or for kids.

Resupply costs

Because this is a printer, it won’t come as a surprise that you will need to keep it supplied with both ink and photo paper. A kit of about 108 sheets of paper that comes packaged with 2 ink rollers costs only about $62CAD, or only about $.45 per photo, and is designed to keep your supply levels perfectly managed, printing about 50 photos per ink roller.   Given that some photo printing gadgets have paper that costs a couple of bucks per photo, this seems like a much more economical choice.

Worth noting is HP Sprocket Studio Plus does not use standard 4 × 6 photo paper, so make sure you buy only the official HP Sprocket accessories and the packaging specifically mentions the Sprocket Studio Plus (or Studio+).

Overall Review: HP Sprocket Studio Plus

HP Sprocket studio plus review IMG_3253

Overall, I really like this printer. It’s a fast, easy way to print lots of photos, and the photo quality is really great. The print cost is low and setup and operation was easy. I was able to print off lots of photos from a recent family visit, then mailed them off as a cute reminder of the good times we had. I also appreciate that HP Sprocket has redesigned the Studio Plus to be more compact and easy to store. It also prints a bit quicker now too. I suppose you could say the biggest downside is the need to re-supply both paper and ink, but in this case the cost is fairly economical, and I don’t think it will come as too much of a shock that you’ll have future printing costs.

I can definitely recommend the HP Sprocket Studio Plus as a convenient, compact and easy to use photo printer for you.  The HP Sprocket Studio Plus sells for about $200CAD or $150 USD and you can get it from places like Best Buy, Amazon, and sprocketprinters.com. You can also get the photo paper and ink cartridges for this printer on Amazon.

bluettiOver the past several years, we’ve witnessed numerous news stories from various publications concerning our environment’s gradually degrading health. The theme mostly revolves around the need to reduce carbon emissions, de-escalating greenhouse gases, and ultimately fighting climate change. Activists and regulators continue to pressure industries to embrace eco-friendly policies, but we can contribute as well by transitioning to clean energy.

Combating Climate Change with Clean Energy

Many environmentalists agree that the primary cause of climate change is the excessive reliance on fossil fuels. Solar energy serves as a key counter to the fossil fuel thirst as the green technology becomes more accessible to average households. All it takes is a couple of solar panels on roofs or balconies to tap into the clean energy source and score a small victory for successfully reducing fossil fuel usage. It isn’t all that difficult to get creative either as other folks take their green energy mobile by equipping their vehicles with solar panels.

By the way, we’d like to thank you to BLUETTI for being a dedicated sponsor of the website, as their support helps us keep creating more helpful reviews, and fascinating content.

However, solar energy isn’t without its flaws which is why the vast majority still hasn’t made the leap. You can never have solar energy as your primary source for electricity if the sun is only available during the day and under ideal weather conditions unless you bridge the gap with an energy storage solution. BLUETTI serves as a leader in this space providing innovative power storage and solar energy harnessing solutions that fill in those missing blanks giving homeowners a clear shot at having sustainable energy for emergencies.

BLUETTI: A Green Energy Pioneer

Since the company’s founding, BLUETTI maintained its clear goal to give people worldwide energy independence. BLUETTI’s drive to innovate is so central to the point that the company’s name is derived from it – protecting the “BLUE” sky through the promise of “Tomorrow” and spirit of “Innovation.” BLUETTI power stations has achieved numerous milestones  involving battery and solar technology as the company continues to push eco-friendly solutions to everyone across all budgets.

One of BLUETTI’s key advancements is its use of highly efficient Lithium Iron Phosphate or LiFePO4 batteries across the entire product stack. Unlike the more traditional lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 batteries have superior stability with added resistance to leaks and combustion. Rated for up to 3,500 cycles before the battery degrades, LiFePO4 batteries also have ten times the lifespan of lead-acid batteries. To further encourage folks to storage their batteries with clean energy, it has developed BLUETTI solar panels which you can connect directly to a BLUETTI battery. The BLUETTI AC300 is one of the company’s popular products that balances capacity with mobility and expandability with the aforementioned solar panel support.

BLUETTI AC300: The Gateway to Self-Sustaining Energy

bluettiThe BLUETTI AC300 power system can provide up to 3,000W of power to energize large appliances in case of power failure. Its source of energy is the BLUETTI B300 battery which you must connect to the AC300 as it provides 3,072Wh of storage. The AC300 offers three additional ports allowing you to add up to four B300 batteries for a grand total of 12,288Wh, which is enough to power a small household for days.

One of the main features of the AC300+B300 system is its ability to serve as a UPS or uninterruptible power supply. Once properly deployed in a household, a mere 20-millisecond window is all it takes to transition a grid failure to seamless power effectively protecting valuable appliances hooked up to the system.

A single B300 battery can provide the 3,000W AC300 with several possibilities including powering an 800W fridge for 3 hours, an 8,000 BTU AC for 3 to 5 hours, or a 1,500W heater for nearly 2 hours. The AC300’s modular nature means that those on a budget can start small and gradually add batteries once the budget allows to extend the runtime of any connected electronics. Modularity also paves the way to versatility as one can opt for fewer batteries for added mobility extending use cases outside of the household such as RVs, barns, and on-site work. High-wattage tools like electric hammers and kettles can run for hours on a single battery and can even extend the mileage of an electric vehicle.

The AC300+B300 combo starts at C$4,598 but BLUETTI is offering a C$799 discount lowering the price to just C$3,799. An extra C$597 savings is attainable if the combo is purchased with two or three PV200 solar panels. Bundling the B300 with the D0505S DC charge enhancer also comes with a C$400 discount.

Smaller households that don’t mind trading a smaller budget and footprint for a reduced capacity can opt for the BLUETTI EP500Pro which uses the same 3,000W inverter complete with UPS support while having a built-in 5,120Wh LiFePO4 battery. BLUETTI is offering a C$1,797 discount for its special C$8,296 EP500Pro bundle which includes three PV200 solar panels to allow 600W solar charging.

Complementing BLUETTI’s Green Solutions

BLUETTI’s portable powerstations cannot make huge environmental impacts on its own as households and neighborhoods can work together in promoting environmental stewardship even without BLUETTI products.

  • Replace single-use plastics with non-harmful alternatives such as reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and coffee cups.
  • Switch off or disconnect any unused appliances and light fixtures.
  • Keep your car in the garage more often and take out your bike or use public transportation for short trips to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Buy organic products, which are pesticide-free, from local vendors.
  • Repair any pipe leaks and modernize your fixtures to help conserve water.
  • Get involved with tree planting activities.
  • Cut down on meats and consume more vegetables and vegan-friendly “meat” alternatives.
  • Use social media to influence your favorite ways in tackling climate change.

These are just some of the things you can do and even doing a fraction of them can help the environment. Groups of people springing to action and inspiring others to take all these small baby steps can create a snowball effect which can bring about more positive outcomes to the climate change situation in the long run.

United Together for a Green Cause

bluettiAs the final quarter of 2023 approaches, we all have a big opportunity to kickstart 2024 with a true green revolution as leaders like BLUETTI provide the technology while everyone else can use these solutions or engage in other eco-friendly alternatives with a common goal in healing the environment and the planet. Long-lasting batteries and solar panels are the future so we must carry on the legacy of renewables to encourage future generations to embrace renewable energy as the one and true resource to ultimately close the door on fossil fuels.

In the world of household cleaning, few names stand as tall as Dyson. Renowned for their technology, innovation, and modern design, Dyson vacuum cleaners have been a household favorite or the go-to brand for many since the 80s. Let’s take a trip through time to see how Dyson vacuum cleaners have evolved from the old classics to the new wonders and this roundup should also help you figure out what’s the difference between Dysons.

Vintage Dyson Vacuum Cleaners

In the annals of home cleaning history, vintage Dyson vacuum cleaners stand as a testament to the brand’s continuing pursuit of innovation and excellence. Dyson isn’t just a common noun for vacuum, Dyson is a real person. James Dyson is a former farmer turned inventor who we can confidently say revolutionized the vacuum industry. We have categorized these vintage vacuums into five different groups, each representing a significant milestone in the evolution of cleaning appliances. From The Trailblazers with cyclonic technology to The All-Terrain Wonders that featured Root Cyclone technology, and beyond.

Phase 1: Cyclonic Technology

G-Force (1983): Dyson’s very first vacuum cleaner, the G-Force carpet cleaner, kickstarted the revolution with its groundbreaking cyclonic technology. It showcased a bagless design and efficient dust separation, signaling a shift away from traditional bagged vacuums.

DC01 (1993): A true trailblazer, the Dyson DC01 marked Dyson’s official entry into the market, redefining cleaning with its bagless design and patented cyclone technology. It laid the foundation for future innovations and introduced users to hassle-free cleaning.

DC07 (2001): The DC07 introduced the revolutionary Root Cyclone technology, delivering consistent performance across varied surfaces. With powerful suction and advanced filtration, Dyson DC07 became an all-terrain wonder for cleaning enthusiasts.

Phase 2: ‘The Ball’ Technology

DC15 (2005): The DC15 took quite a quantum leap with its groundbreaking Ball technology, granting you the power to glide effortlessly around furniture and obstacles. This enhanced maneuverability made cleaning a breeze. A version of the Ball for homes with pets is also a massive hit with consumers.

Phase 3: Embracing Cordless

DC31 (2009): The handheld DC31 liberated users from the shackles of power cords, proving that convenience could coexist with power. The cordless design of DC31 offered the freedom to clean wherever needed.

DC44 (2011): The DC44 emphasized the advantages of cordless vacuuming, providing optimal performance in a lightweight and portable form factor. It catered to users seeking efficient cleaning on the go.

Phase 4: Smarter innovations

DC59 (2013): A turning point in vacuum cleaner evolution, the Dyson DC59 marked the dawn of cordless stick vacuums. Its powerful digital motor and fade-free suction made it a household favorite.

V6 (2014): Taking cordless cleaning to new heights, the V6 delivered an unparalleled cleaning experience with its hygienic bin-emptying mechanism, HEPA filtration, powerful motor, and attachments, making it one of the top choices of the time.

V7 (2016): Improving on its predecessors, the v7 brought enhanced battery life and superior suction power. Its advanced filtration system captured allergens, promoting a healthier home environment.

V8 Absolute (2017): A revolution in cleaning, the v8 Absolute wowed users with its powerful digital motor V8 and versatility. Its HEPA filtration system ensured thorough cleaning for allergy sufferers.

V8 Carbon Fiber (2018): Taking center stage with its sleek design, the v8 Carbon Fiber exemplified Dyson’s dedication to top-notch performance and aesthetics. It offered a stylish approach to cleaning.

Dyson’s vintage vacuum cleaners, from the G-Force to the V8 Carbon Fiber, paved the way for the brand’s legacy. Each model was a leap forward in technology, design, and user experience. These classics transformed the way we clean our homes, and they are a testament to Dyson’s ingenuity and vision.

Dyson’s Modern Vacuum Lineup since 2018

Vacuums get smarter

Dyson has truly revolutionized the concept of cleaning with its contemporary range of vacuum cleaners, especially the ones launched after 2018. These vacuums are feature-packed and boast superior cleaning capabilities, captivating users with their ability to tackle even the most stubborn dirt and debris with ease. Not only are they powerful and efficient, but their modern and minimalistic design language also adds a touch of elegance to any home.

  1. Dyson V10: The Perfect Balance (2018)

The Dyson V10 was a game-changer in the realm of cordless stick vacuum cleaners. Unveiled in 2018, this model struck the perfect balance between power and portability, setting new standards for performance in the cordless vacuum category. Armed with the powerful Dyson digital motor Dyson V10, this machine generated a whopping 125,000 revolutions per minute, delivering impressive suction power that could rival corded counterparts.

One of the most notable features of the V10 was its advanced point-and-shoot hygienic bin emptying system, making dirt disposal a breeze with a simple trigger action. With up to 60 minutes of fade-free suction in its lowest power mode, this vacuum allowed users to clean more in a single charge.

  1. Dyson V11: The Intelligent Revolution (2019)

v

Building on the success of the V10, Dyson launched the Dyson V11 Absolute, which we reviewed, in 2019. The V11 took cordless vacuuming to new heights with an intelligent Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS) system, which automatically adjusts the motor speed and suction power based on the surface being cleaned.

The V11 also featured an intuitive LCD screen to display real-time performance data, including battery life, selected power mode, and maintenance alerts. With a battery life of up to 60 minutes in Eco mode and 40 minutes in Auto mode, the V11 offered prolonged cleaning sessions.

Bigger, more powerful stick vacs

  1. Dyson V11 Outsize: The Big Clean (2020)

As an exciting addition to the V11 series, Dyson unveiled the Dyson V11 Outsize, which we also went hands-on with, with an even larger bin and cleaning head. Launched in 2020, this model was specifically designed for bigger cleaning tasks, making it an ideal choice for larger homes or those with multiple floors.

The V11 Outsize has an impressive 25% wider cleaning head than the V11, covering more surface area with each pass. Its High Torque XL cleaner head effectively removes ground-in dirt and stubborn pet hair from carpets and hard floors. With up to 120 minutes or 2 hours of run time in Eco mode, this powerhouse vacuum allows for more extended cleaning sessions without interruptions. I did a comparison of the V11 vs V11 Outsize here.

Lasers enter the picture

  • 4. Dyson V15 Detect (2021)

The Dyson V15 Detect brought a new innovation; the innovative Laser Slim Fluffy cleaning head, a standout feature not found in other models. The laser technology highlights dust and dirt on hard floors, making cleaning more efficient and thorough. This addition sets the V15 apart, especially for users with predominantly hard flooring. This vac is a real powerhouse with more suction power than any of its predecessors. Its standout feature is the green laser-equipped cleaner head, which illuminates hard floors, revealing hidden debris that would otherwise be invisible. The V15 Detect also features advanced anti-tangle attachments, making it a clear winner for a superior cleaning experience. The vacuum comes fully loaded with a range of attachments for versatile cleaning, and its LCD screen displays real-time particle counts, making your cleaning sessions a scientific experience.

While the price tag might be steep, the performance and capabilities it offers are unparalleled. If you’re already using a V10 or V11, the upgrade might not be necessary, but for V8 or earlier model owners, the V15 Detect is a worthy investment. It’s a perfect companion for those who take cleaning seriously and want to make the chore more enjoyable.,

5. Dyson V12 Detect Slim: Next-Level Cleaning with Laser Precision (2022)

Dyson V12 Detect Slim (full review here)  The V12 Detect Slim also boasts a more lightweight and compact design, making it easier to maneuver and carry around the house. Additionally, its swappable battery pack ensures extended cleaning sessions for larger homes or more demanding cleaning tasks.

While the V11 Outsize remains a solid performer with a larger dustbin capacity, the V12 Detect Slim’s overall package, including its competitive price point and cutting-edge features, positions it as a desirable option for those looking for a powerful and advanced cordless vacuum.

Dyson Gen5detect: Unleashing Cleaning Brilliance (2022)

All pieces of Dyson Jen five Det. vacuum laid out in display format on the floor.

The most recent Dyson innovation is the Dyson Gen5detect which we had a chance to review hands on. This powerful and coveted cordless vacuum stands out from its predecessors. It boasts more suction power (up to 262 air watts, answering the question, Which Dyson vacuum has most suction?) and a longer battery life of up to 70 minutes, ensuring extended cleaning sessions. The revamped LCD interface displays real-time particle levels, guaranteeing a thorough cleaning experience. The Dyson Gen5 detect package includes a range of attachments, such as the Digital Motorbar cleaner head for all floor types, the Fluffy Optic cleaner head with a green light to reveal invisible dust on hard floors, a hair screw tool for removing pet hair, a combination tool for wide nozzle and brush cleaning, and a wand with built-in dusting and crevice tool. Its allergy-friendly design, sealed to HEPA standards, removes particles as small as 0.1 microns and 99.9% of live viruses. Despite being a bit heavy, the Dyson Gen5detect is a top-of-the-line cordless vacuum cleaner, delivering exceptional performance and usability.

With an on/off button replacing the previous power trigger, the Dyson Gen5detect eliminates finger strain during cleaning. Its enhanced features, longer battery life, and usability improvements set it apart from its predecessors. The vacuum’s outstanding performance and versatility make it highly sought after.

What is the average lifespan of a Dyson vacuum cleaner?

One of the most common questions asked about Dyson vacuum cleaners is, aside from are Dyson cleaners worth it, is what is the average lifespan of a Dyson vacuum cleaner? I’ve been fortunate to review many of them, and still on an original Dyson DC07 corded upright vacuum from 2005. That original vacuum is still going strong, however it’s massive size and heavy weight plus the fact it needs to operate plugged in means I rarely if ever use it these days. I much prefer the lightweight maneuverability and cordless freedom of the new range of stick vacuums. The most recent stick vacuum that I own has been in my home for about four years, and it is still going strong. I try to take care to maintain it by removing any tangled hair and generally keeping the device looking tidy. I have a little doubt that it will continue to last.

What’s next for Dyson?

Dyson has made significant strides in the development of their vacuum cleaners over the years, with each new model representing notable advancements in cleaning technology. From the earlier G-Force to the more recent V12 Detect Slim and V15 Detect, Dyson has consistently introduced innovative and powerful vacuum cleaners tailored to meet various cleaning needs.

The brand’s dedication to excellence, user experience, and cutting-edge features are evident in their post-2018 lineup, featuring models such as the V10, V11, and V11 Outsize, which have redefined the standards of cleaning. Notably, the Gen5 Detect has garnered quite some attention as a sought-after and potent cordless vacuum, contributing to Dyson’s reputation in the home cleaning appliance industry.

Dyson has also announced several new products in 2023 including an all new wet-dry stick vacuum, the Dyson Submarine. (The new wet cleaner head will apparently not be compatible with older vacuums due to the fact they would have nowhere to suck up and hold the water, and would also be without water resistance.)

We are hoping to get hands-on with that new device as well as the new robot vacuum, the 360 Vis Nav which will replace the Heurist, which never seemed to catch on with consumers. Watch for a full review of that device soon too.
