Summer is in full swing, and in Calgary anyway, it’s been stinkin’ hot. That’s why this month’s Tech Talk TV segment focused on gadgets and gear to beat the heat.

Philips AirFryer

We all love deep fried food, don’t we? It’s just so unhealthy.  But a new kitchen device promises to give us that deep fried flavour and crispness without all the fat and calories.  Enter the Philips Airfryer.

The Airfryer is a large, food processor-sized kitchen appliance that cooks food as though it were fried. Philips says it uses, “new, unique TurboStar technology” to fry, roast, bake and grill, all in one device.

Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link

The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link is a multi purpose heating and cooling device. It’s a fan, heater, and air purifier all built into one tall narrow cylinder-shaped device. The major difference in this device from all other fans and heaters is that it has no blade.

There’s not really any set-up to speak of. You plug it in and turn it on and that’s about it. The device is controlled with the included Dyson remote control.

The remote will stick to the top of the fan unit with magnets, meaning it’s always going to be findable when you need it so long as you remember to put it back. The remote turns the fan on and off, allows you to control the level of airflow, can change exactly how the air gets blown into the room, using “focused mode” it’s also got buttons to change it from heat to cool, to turn oscillation on and off, and to set a sleep timer or at night Mode. More on those later. You can also download the Dyson Link app on iOS or Android.  Using the app gives you a few additional features.

The big question on many minds is, how does a bladeless fan work, and can it move air as effectively as a bladed fan? Read the full review HERE.

Tentsile Connect tent

The best way to stay cool this season is to sleep outdoors, under the stars, in the cool air. You can do that with the magical looking Tentsile Connect tent. The tent straps securely to trees with wratchets and seatbelt-style webbing.

Sleeping in the Connect tent is like being suspended in an ultra comfortable hammock. You don’t roll into the middle of the tent, and you’re not contorted in a U-shape either.  I woke up feeling refreshed and well rested.

I’m working on a full review of the Tentsile plus some How-To tips, so please check back in a week or so, and/or ask me any questions you have in comments.

Congrats to CONTEST winner Dana Hutton of Calgary who’s getting a new Philips Airfryer!

You always find such interesting stuff to bring to the segment. The AirFryer sounds like a great thing to have. My partner eats wings probably at least a couple times a week. Would love to slip a healthier version in there every now and again.

Your review was especially helpful today as we’re struggling to beat the heat in our AC-less house these days!

  8. cowtowncowboy on July 11, 2017 at 11:18 am

Great reviews Erin. The Dyson is definitely ‘cool’, and ‘hot’ too, but that Philips Airfryer is simply amazing. I had no idea you could fry with air. I would love one in my home but the cost seems a bit high for our budget now so winning one from you would be the highlight of my Stampede and Canada’s 150 summer. Thank you.

  9. Darren Morrison on July 11, 2017 at 11:09 am

Love chicken wings, with less oil. Nice find Erin!

Hi Erin, really appreciated getting your run down on the three products displayed on your segment this morning. When my husband seen the Philip’s Deepfryer he looked at me with a big smile! I new he was thinking, “Wow! We could eat foods that we are not allowed to eat!” He is fighting some terrible conditions and I would love to see him be able to eat things we have stopped due to the higher oil content. This would be wonderful to win!! Thanks!!

Great reviews, the Philips Air Frier looks like a new way to cook that is much healthier than the old deep fried methods. With health concerns I have not been able to eat foods like “chicken wings” and this kitchen appliance would be a nice addition to expand the food menu for my special dietary needs.
    Thank you very much Erin!

  45. Scott Adams on July 11, 2017 at 7:34 am

Hello, thanks for demonstrating the AirFryer. We have an old oil deep frier which we hardly use due to the mess and use of all that oil. We would get much more use from an AirFryer.
