Kensington Boom Arm, reviewSince I made the move to working from home full-time, I’ve been making a conscious effort to ensure my workspace is not only comfortable, but that it’s nice to be in. I’ve also been working to keep my desk tidy to I can focus on tasks not clutter. That’s why when I ready about some new accessories from Kensington, I wanted to try them out. The Kensington Bi-colour Ring Light with webcam mount arrived into my test kitchen along with the Kensington A1020 Boom Arm and Kensington W1050 Fixed Focus Webcam with 1080p resolution.

Set up & installation

Since I needed some better light for video calls without adding more things to the surface of my desk, I attached the Ring Light to the Boom Arm immediately, but you could also use the Arm for a microphone, or camera. Then I used the webcam mount on the Ring Light to place the webcam.

Kensington A1020 Boom Arm

The Boom Arm is very easy to set up. It arrives in a couple of pieces, but they go together instantly. Then the Arm simply clamps to your desk, and it’s got an adjustable grip for all sizes of workspace.

The Boom Arm has articulating joints with thumb screws that let you loosen things up so you can move them easily, or tighten them to keep your gear in a fixed position.

The Arm is quite versatile. I placed it off to the side of my monitor so I could bring it in any time I need light or a different camera angle.

I then mounted the Kensington Bicolour Ring Light with webcam mount onto the end of the arm. The Ring Light has a USB cable which will plug into a computer to power it (or you could add an AC adapter and plug it into the wall). A small switch on the cord adjusts brightness and colour temperature.

I installed the Kensington W1050 Fixed Focus Webcam with 1080p resolution on the mount, and you could also easily mount a smartphone in here too.

I wasn’t thinking I needed a webcam, since I have one built in to my laptop, but I thought I’d try to give this one a go. I’m glad I did.

One of the worst things about a laptop webcam is that, generally speaking, it sits very low and it’s not adjustable unless you move your entire laptop around. With the Kensington W1050 Fixed Focus Webcam on that Boom Arm, I’m able to place the camera anywhere, and get much more flattering angles. Plus with the integrated light in my set up, it’s an all around improvement in video calls and video casting. There is also a simple clamp or pinch mount included on the webcam if you want to mount it somewhere else too.

The camera quality is quite good, at 1080 HD and there’s a privacy shutter that slides over the lens for peace of mind. You get a 95 degree field of view and because it’s a fixed focus camera, it will keep the subjects centred and clear.

When I connected the camera to my MacBook, it worked right away, all I had to do was choose it as the new camera source in my settings. Kensington also has software available for it if your computer needs a bit more support.

In short, I’m thrilled with these gadgets; they’re small accessories that can make a big impact on desk organization and home office productivity.

Thanks for the reviews Erin. I’ve had a green screen and software for a few years and now that I’m semi-retired, I would like to set up a studio with the boom arm, webcam and ring light to start creating YouTube content.

Hi Erin, I always appreciate your reviews. Being busy does not always allow me to stay connect with the latest technologies, so thanks so much! Love the Kensington ProV package and the boom arm, ring light and camera are a great addition especially to a smaller home office space with not as much natural light.

Even though I live in NZ and am not eligible for the contest I thought I would still comment.

The idea of webcam, light ring and boom arm combo is a super cool idea. I’ve given up trying to get a good angle and light from my screen mounted cam. During online meetings I’m either too close or too far away for comfort. Using a boom would allow you to position the camera in the best position for each use case especially if you sit close to a window and don’t like having the blinds closed all day 😉

Thank you for your review on these products. I’ve purchased several similar items in the past couple of years and was unsatisfied with all of them.
I always appreciate your straightforward and honest reviews!

Oh I love those. I need it the chats with my friends because of my laptop is 10 years old and it’s cam is pretty dull.

  11. Denise Kervin on September 15, 2022 at 12:47 pm

I am so glad you do all of the hard work researching these products for me.

6 months ago I started a new job where 90% of the time is home office. I am currently using my laptop camera and find it is cumbersome to always look down on it and the quality is not the greatest. Having a dedicated webcam and light will be a great addition without sacrificing desk space!

  13. Kay on September 15, 2022 at 11:58 am

This looks like a good set up. Would you be using an external mic as well?

  14. Minaz Janmohamed on September 15, 2022 at 11:56 am

Thanks for doing these reviews. I love your down to earth versions.

This is exactly the type of setup I need. My current situation is so janky.
