If you’re new to the world of fitness tracking, the setup steps for a Fitbit might seem a bit intimidating. Don’t worry, we’re here to walk you through how to set up a Fitbit. You’re also in the right place if you have an existing Fitbit account and need to migrate that over to a Google account (which will be mandatory very shortly). Let’s dive into it.
How to set up a New Fitbit Account
Step 1: Getting Prepared
The first thing you’ll want to do is to make sure that your phone or tablet is charged to at least 50 percent. You don’t want to run into a shutdown halfway through the task. Similarly, make sure your Fitbit device is also at least halfway charged. If either device isn’t, plug them in and charge them up.
You’ll also want to ensure your phone’s Bluetooth is turned on and you don’t have any other Fitbit devices nearby (a friend or family member’s for example) that could confuse the app.
Step 2: Download the Fitbit App
If your phone or tablet is charged, you can open the Apple or Google Play store and download the Fitbit App. If this is your first app, you’ll need to create an account. If not, you can sign in to the app with your existing account.
Step 3: Turn on your Fitbit
Wake your Fitbit device by pressing the button on the side or tapping the face, depending on which Fitbit model you’re using.
Step 4: Run the Setup Steps in the App

- In the Fitbit app, click on your profile picture to see your account settings.
- Click on Set Up a Device.
- The steps essentially involved pairing your Fitbit to your phone by matching a numerical code.
- You can easily follow the instructions within the app and have your Fitbit connected in no time.
How to migrate a Fitbit account to Google

If you have an existing Fitbit account, now might be a good time to migrate it over to a Google account. Google purchased Fitbit a few years back, and while they still support Fitbit accounts, that’s scheduled to change for good by 2025.
Why won’t my Fitbit account migrate to Google?
Note: It’s important to note that setting up a Fitbit account doesn’t create a Google account. Even if you’ve used your Gmail account to create your Fitbit account, that Fitbit account isn’t part of the Google world. You might also find that the synchronization between Google and Fitbit, particularly if you did use a Gmail account for your initial set up, isn’t 100%. When setting up the new Pixel Watch 2 with Fitbit fitness tracking we found there was a bit of trouble with the migration because an older gmail address had already been used to create a Fitbit account, even though it was not being used today. If you encounter problems for a similar reason, or the set up and migration process is not going smoothly, don’t hesitate to reach out to Fitbit customer service. Their customer care team is really helpful and assisted us with what’s called a manual migration. This process took about a week to complete, but now everything works seamlessly.
- When you log in to your Fitbit account, you’ll likely receive a pop-up or notification recommending you migrate your account.
- Simply follow the steps provided in that notification to migrate your account.
- If you’re not seeing a notification, your account may not be ready to be migrated over just yet, and Google will notify you when it is.
- Your Fitbit account won’t share data with your Google account unless you authorize it.
- If you choose to migrate your account, you’ll have control over which info the Fitbit shares with things like Google Assistant and Google Fit. The process itself will only take a few minutes to complete.
If you’re using My Family within Fitbit, and you’re the main guardian of the Fitbit My Family group and the manager of your Google Family Group, you can begin moving the family account over. Any members over the age of 12 will need to create a Google account, and younger children will be moved over.
