New year, new resolutions for a new you. Getting fit is probably the top improvement we resolve to make when the calendar turns over. I’ve curated a list of a few key fitness gadgets and tech items that can help you get fit, stay healthy and monitor your progress.

Apple Watch 5

Get guided workouts and run tracking, step counts and heart rate monitoring, not to mention EKG and low heart rate monitoring, all on Apple’s newest Watch, Series 5.

Apple’s Activity app is your control centre for all your fitness tracking. It will keep tabs on your steps, calories burned, how long you sit or stand, how many calories you’re burning, how many flights of stairs you climb, and if you go for walks or other activity it will track that too.

I recommend RunGo app for runners (it’s a Canadian app!) and Nike Run Club.

Not a runner or hardcore athlete? The Watch can help you improve wellness.

Apple Watch’s Breathe app nudges you through the day and reminds you to take some deep breaths and clear your head. Turn it on, and follow the steps for a short, medium or longer duration relax break right on your wrist.

Obviously the integration with your Apple iPhone is seamless too, making it a great choice for Apple users. You’ll get call and text alerts right to your wrist, plus you can enable all kind of other productivity hacks on the Watch, like when someone rings your Ring video doorbell, you’ll know it.

Apple AirPods Pro

Using the new AirPods Pro with your Watch is a natural pairing. These new AirPods have some additional features that the previous version didn’t.

For starters they have a much tighter fit for noise isolation, there’s also digital noise cancelling and—a key for fitness uses or for runners—is the Transparency Mode, which lets you hear background noise while still listening to music or audio, so you can stay aware of your surroundings.

Withings Body Cardio Scale

Get your weigh ins or other info right to your wrist.

Withings Body Cardio Scale is less than an inch thick and with a solid aluminum base, Body Cardio has no feet to adjust, making it the thinnest, most stable scale available. Withings says this design means it works just as well on any surface, from a hard floor to a carpet.

This scale is also powered by a rechargeable battery so you can just plug it in when the power is low. A small battery icon on the Health mate app keeps tabs on the overall power level. This scale costs about $150CAD.

Why get a smart scale?

The Withings folks says people who set a weight goal report losing twice as much weight. When you set a goal, the Withings Health Mate app coaches you with tips and encouragement to help you reach your objective.
Every weigh-in appears in the Health Mate app automatically, via WiFi or Bluetooth sync.

With your weight, body composition, and heart health history, you can see what works, reinforce positive behaviours and stay focused on the big picture. It’s also pretty handy not having to write down your weigh ins daily. Up to eight users can be recognized automatically, and each will have their data independently synced to their Health Mate profile.

Tangram Rookie Smart Skipping Rope

Tangram Factory’s Smart Rope ROOKIE skipping rope helps make your cardio workout even more effective with connected magnetic sensors that count your jumps and then display the results via the SmartRope app on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Two ball bearings guarantee smooth, natural motion.

Pair with SmartRope app

Pair Smart Rope ROOKIE with the SmartRope app on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. It accurately records each complete revolution of the rope as a complete jump, as well as monitoring calories burned and workout times. The app offers interval training recommendations and keeps you motivated by unlocking awards and supporting competition with friends. In addition, you can sync it with Apple HealthKit to help provide an even more accurate picture of your overall well-being.

You can adjust the rope length to suit users up to 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 meters) tall. It sells for about $70 CAD.
