If you have a new Amazon Echo Show 8 and you want to try some of it’s new features, you might be watching this video because you’ve realized they’re not intuitive or easy to set up. So in this video I’ll show you how to set up Occupancy Routines, which will allow your Show 8 2nd generation to do things like turn the lights, play music ow whatever… on when you approach.
How to set up Alexa Occupancy Routines on Amazon Echo Show
To enable occupancy routines, first make sure to turn on Home Monitoring directly on Echo Show 8. Start on your Echo Show Device:

- Swipe down from the top of screen and select Settings.
- Tap Camera and set the Home Monitoring toggle to On.
- Once set up, your Echo Show 8 will appear as a camera in your Alexa app, or just say, “Alexa, show me [device name]”
- To view the camera in your Alexa App:
- Go to Devices.
- Choose Camera.
- Select Echo Show 8 (or whichever device you want to respond)
Next, simply:
- Go to the More button on the bottom right of the app and select Routines.
- Select the + icon in the top right corner.
- Enter routine name.
- Select When This Happens, then choose Smart Home and Echo Show 8.
- Choose either People are detected for an occupancy routine or People aren’t detected for a vacancy routine, and click Save.
- Add an action (choose from available categories like ‘smart home’ or ‘music’).
- Click Save.
That’s it. Now you can get the weather forecast when you walk by, have the lights turn on, of just have your favourite music start up.
