With each passing year, we get closer to the world of the future that was imagined on shows like Star Trek. We can’t teleport ourselves from place to place yet, but we can now interact with computers using only our voice, automate processes like turning lights and equipment on and off, and create elaborate programs that work in our own homes. How amazing is that!
The Smart Home is a reality, and with the number of devices that work with Smart Home systems increasing every year, the only limit to what you can do is your own imagination.
Best Smart Home Gadgets to buy on Amazon Prime Day
If you’re just getting started with Smart Home devices, you’ll want to start with the basics. Smart Home devices connect through your home Wi-Fi and are controlled by some kind of hub or app. If you’re using Amazon Alexa, you’d download the Alexa App and buy either an Echo or Echo Show that can act as the command center for all your routines and devices. Then you can add devices to the Alexa system and use either voice control or the app itself to interact with those devices.
Some starting points include getting Smart lighting, either with Smart bulbs or Smart Plugs, as well as heating via a Smart thermostat and music with a hub unit of some kind.
Ring Video Doorbell
Video doorbells are a great addition to any Smart Home setup, and the Ring is among the best. It allows you to see who is at the door before you open it, have a two-way conversation, and even prerecord a message for anyone who rings. You can also set up routines to have other devices activate when someone enters the camera’s field of view. Ring has several models of video doorbell, from wireless, to solar powered to hardwired. Check out the reviews we’ve done recently on Ring Video Doorbells to help you choose.
Philips Hue smart light starter kit
Philips Hue line is the gold standard of the Smart Home lighting world. They have a great line with lots of lighting styles, and they connect seamlessly to Smart Home setups. The Starter Kit is the perfect place to begin with Smart Lighting; read my full review of Philips Hue Starter kit to see how easy it is. The starter kits come with a three-pack of Smart lightbulbs that work with your existing lamps or fixtures and a Hue Bridge that connects to your Smart Home system. The starter kit is the best way to get into smart lighting.
Philips Hue Outdoor Bollards, Spotlight or Lightstrip
If you want to expand your Smart Lighting into the yard, the Hue Bollards, Spotlights or Lightstrips are a great way to do it. They add safety and security, and can be programmed to activate either at sundown or when motion is detected through your Smart Home setup. Hue Outdoor are a great way to add color and pizazz to your yard and work with the Hue system to activate and change on command.
Amazon Echo Show 10 or Show 15
Amazon’s own Smart Tech is almost sure to be on sale for Prime Day, and the Echo Show is a great Hub device that elevates your Smart Home game with a screen. The Echo Show 10 (my review of Amazon Echo Show 10 shows why it’s my favourite Echo Show option in my review) sits on a counter, has a speaker for audio, and a screen you can use for videos, video calls, and display weather, news, recipes, etc. The Echo Show 15 (see my review) combines everything into a wall-mounted screen that replaces the family calendar with user-specific information. It can also double as a screen for showing movies and TV shows.
Amazon Smart Thermostat
Smart Thermostats are a great way to extend your Smart Home while saving money. Amazon’s Smart Thermostat can be programmed to lower the temperature at specific times of the day or even when you’re out of the house. You can use voice commands (through an Echo device) to change the temperature without having to go to the unit. There’s also a smartphone app that tracks the temperature and allows you to change the temperature when you’re away from the house. The full review of the Amazon smart thermostat is coming soon.
Amazon Smart Plug (to smarten dumb older appliances)
If you have older appliances that weren’t built with Smart technology, you can add them to your Smart Home environment using smart plugs. Let’s say you have indoor plants with growing lights. You can set up the plugs to turn on in the morning and off at night. You can even set a small heater nearby and set up a routine to turn it on when the temperature drops below a preset number. The beauty of smart plugs is that any device that has an on/off switch can be automated. I did a full review of Amazon Smart Plug and you can see why is has over 50,000 positive reviews.
TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi System Deco M5
A mesh WIFi system is becoming a must nowadays, as it allows you to cover the whole house with a strong Wi-Fi signal. The Deco M5 is super easy to set up, allows for high speeds, and is a game-changer if you’re using a single WiFi antenna router. You can use Amazon Alexa to turn guest Wi-Fi on and off, and the Deco system is expandable by adding more base stations. This is one of the biggest sellers on Amazon, and we’re all hoping it goes on sale for Prime Day. You can also check out our review of Google Nest Wi-Fi here.
Smart Home devices are here to stay and becoming easier to set up and use all the time. Amazon Prime Day is the perfect day to take advantage of the savings and either begin or increase your Smart Home system.
